Sourcing gas heat-treatment furnaces from China

Gas-fired heat-treatment furnaces for metals from China pay 0% UK duty, with no anti-dumping duty. Furnaces placed on the UK market must meet machinery safety rules, with conformity documentation, marking and English instructions. Check combustion safeguards and loaded temperature uniformity. Cambridge China Bridge sources gas-fired heat-treatment furnaces.

Zero duty on gas-fired metal heat-treatment furnaces

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 8417 covers non-electric industrial or laboratory furnaces and ovens, including incinerators. Gas-fired furnaces for heat-treating metals fall under 8417 10 00 00. Annealing, hardening and tempering furnaces share this code, so the repeated table entries describe process variants rather than separate tariff lines.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China on the metal-furnace and parts lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, no suspension and no attached import controls. Zero duty does not remove machinery safety obligations or site requirements.

Confirm the commodity code using the material being treated, the process and whether the shipment contains a complete furnace or separately supplied parts. Electric furnaces use heading 8514, while separately supplied burners use heading 8416. See the wider industrial furnaces guide for other furnace families.

Specify the load, gas supply and treatment cycle

Specify the metals and treatment process, batch or continuous operation, usable chamber dimensions, load arrangement and maximum load. Agree working temperature, heating rate, soak conditions and temperature uniformity with the intended load. State the gas type and available supply pressure, furnace atmosphere, burner arrangement, circulation, refractory lining, insulation and recording system.

Confirm with the relevant market surveillance authority the applicable declaration of conformity, marking and English-instruction requirements under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 for the furnace supplied. Machinery must be safe before it is placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. Ask for the furnace drawings, gas train diagram, wiring diagram and operating instructions for the exact configuration.

Agree the flue connection, installation and commissioning package before ordering. Ask the relevant environmental regulator to confirm whether the installation needs an environmental permit and who should arrange it. The chimney must prevent emissions from damaging health or causing a nuisance. Have the site engineer review the exhaust arrangement and check the builder's comparable installations through factory verification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one gas-fired batch furnace for metal heat treatment under 8417 10 00 00, invoiced at £72,000 free on board, with £6,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £78,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £78,500, so it is £15,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Combustion controls: witness tests of flame supervision, purge sequencing, safety shut-off valves, door interlocks and emergency stops. Record the results against the agreed control sequence.

Loaded performance: run the agreed treatment cycle with a representative load. Record temperature across the working zone, heat-up behaviour, soak stability and gas consumption using the agreed test method.

Build and arrival condition: compare refractory and insulation with the drawings. Check casing welds, door seals, burner mountings and thermocouple positions; inspect for shifted lining, cracks and transport damage on arrival.

Documents and handover: match the declaration, marking, English instructions and diagrams to the supplied furnace. Check the spares list and commissioning records. Use the quality inspection guide to plan factory and arrival checks.

What goes wrong

An empty-chamber demonstration can miss cold spots inside a loaded furnace. Uneven heating or poor circulation can leave metal outside the agreed treatment conditions. Door leakage and damaged insulation increase heat loss, while refractory cracks or spalling contaminate the chamber and interrupt production.

A burner package specified for a different gas supply can create commissioning problems. Missing control diagrams make faults harder to resolve. Agree the loaded acceptance test, gas supply details, replacement refractory specification and commissioning responsibilities before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on gas-fired heat-treatment furnaces from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for metal heat-treatment furnaces under 8417 10 00 00 and furnace parts under 8417 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

What gas supply details should I give the factory?

Give the gas type, available supply pressure and site connection details. Ask the factory to identify the matching burners, gas train and commissioning settings in its proposal.

How should I test temperature uniformity?

Agree sensor positions, load arrangement and the treatment cycle before testing. Record temperatures across the usable working zone with a representative load, including the soak period.

What documents should come with the furnace?

Check the declaration of conformity, marking and English instructions. Also request furnace drawings, gas train and wiring diagrams, control settings, test records and a spares list matching the delivered machine.
