0% duty on forging furnaces and parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 8417 covers non-electric industrial or laboratory furnaces and ovens. Gas-fired furnaces heating metal for forging fall within the metal heat-treatment line, 8417 10 00 00. Furnace parts are listed under 8417 90 00 00. The table shows furnace configurations sharing the metal-heating code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China on these lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. This tariff position does not replace machinery safety checks.

Confirm the commodity code using the heating process, fuel, drawings and shipment contents. Identify separately supplied burners and components before declaring them as furnace parts. For the wider product family, see gas-fired heat-treatment furnaces.

Specify billet heating and furnace integration

Specify the metal grades, billet shapes and sizes, loading method, usable chamber dimensions and required forging temperature. Agree heating rate, temperature uniformity, acceptable scale formation and fuel consumption against a defined load and test method. State the gas type and available supply pressure, burner arrangement, refractory construction, door design and transfer route to the forging equipment.

Confirm with the relevant authority how the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 apply to furnaces supplied to the intended market, including any requirements for a declaration of conformity, marking and instructions in English. CE marking remains recognised in Great Britain. Ask for the gas train and wiring diagrams, operating instructions, maintenance access and commissioning responsibilities before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: One gas-fired chamber forging furnace, illustrative order under 8417 10 00 00, invoiced at £72,000 free on board, with £6,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £78,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £78,500, so it is £15,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Combustion controls: have the supplier demonstrate flame supervision, purge, safety shut-off and emergency stops. Match the installed gas train and burner controls to the agreed drawings.

Heating performance: witness a trial using representative billets. Record heat-up behaviour, temperature distribution, recovery after loading and scale formation against the agreed acceptance method.

Refractory and handling: check lining materials, insulation, door seals, loading supports and casing welds. On arrival, look for displaced refractory, cracked lining and damage to burner connections.

Documents and identification: match the furnace identification to the declaration of conformity, English instructions and diagrams. Check the agreed spares list and record inspection results through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

An empty chamber reaching its set temperature does not show that loaded billets heat evenly. Cold billet centres, excessive scale, leaking doors and damaged refractory can undermine forging performance. Agree a loaded trial and retain the results before shipment.

Gas supply differences and unclear installation responsibilities can delay commissioning. Have the receiving engineer review the gas train, ventilation, exhaust arrangement and unloading plan before dispatch. Before ordering, ask the relevant environmental authority whether the proposed installation needs a site environmental permit for emissions and confirm the operator's responsibilities.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on gas-fired forging furnaces from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% for metal-heating furnaces under 8417 10 00 00 and furnace parts under 8417 90 00 00, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Does a gas-fired furnace count as an electric furnace if it has electrical controls?

Describe the heat source and the complete equipment when confirming classification. Heading 8417 covers non-electric furnaces; electric industrial furnaces are covered by heading 8514.

What documents should I request from the furnace factory?

Request the declaration of conformity, conformity marking details, English operating instructions, gas train and wiring diagrams, loaded heating-test records and the agreed spares list.

How should I test a forging furnace before shipment?

Use representative billets and the agreed loading pattern. Check temperature distribution, heating behaviour, scale formation, door sealing and combustion safety controls against the purchase specification.
