Sourcing engine valves from China

Engine valves from China normally carry 2% UK duty; a narrowly defined diesel-engine valve suspension can reduce this to 0%. Match the engine application, material and manufacturing use to the tariff description. For consumer sales, do not sell valves you know or should know are unsafe. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine valves.

A diesel engine with cylinders and valves.

Engine valve duty and the limited suspension

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8409 covers parts suitable solely or principally for the engines of headings 8407 or 8408. This guide concerns intake and exhaust engine valves. The selected lines carry a standard duty of 2% for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no attached import controls in the supplied tariff snapshot.

The suspension on 8409 99 00 70 gives 0.00 % only to metal-alloy intake and exhaust valves with Rockwell hardness from HRC 20 to HRC 50, for use in manufacturing compression-ignition motor vehicle engines. Its footnote excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing these products. No suspension is listed for 8409 91 00 45. Suspensions on the selected other-parts lines describe different products; do not assume they cover loose replacement valves.

Ask your customs broker to match the engine type, hardness, material and intended use to the full commodity code. The table includes specific manufacturing descriptions and other-parts alternatives, rather than interchangeable codes. See engine parts for the wider heading. For the reverse trade route, see our guide to exporting engine parts to China. For intake manifolds, see our engine intake manifold sourcing guide.

Specify the valve geometry and material

Order against the original equipment part number and a controlled drawing or reference sample. Identify the engine application and distinguish intake from exhaust valves. Specify overall length, stem and head diameters, seat angle, keeper-groove geometry, stem straightness and the tolerances at each inspection point.

Agree the alloy, heat treatment, hardness measurement positions, stem coating and seat-face finish. Ask the factory to identify any welded construction and provide matching material and process records. Approve a test-fit sample before releasing the batch. Use your own branding unless the vehicle maker has authorised its trade mark on the valves or packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of intake and exhaust valves for motor vehicle engine manufacture under 8409 91 00 45, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: compare the batch certificates, alloy and heat-treatment records with the approved specification; check hardness at the drawing positions.

Geometry: measure stem diameter, length, head diameter, seat angle, keeper grooves, straightness and seat-face runout against the drawing.

Surface and fit: inspect for cracks, burrs, coating damage and corrosion; test-fit samples with the intended guide, seat and retainers. For the mating component, see our guide to sourcing engine valve guides.

Packing and traceability: match valve markings and carton labels to the part number and batch records; check separation and corrosion protection on arrival. Arrange quality inspection before shipment.

What goes wrong

A valve can resemble the original yet have the wrong stem diameter, keeper groove or seat angle. Poor seat contact can cause leakage; unsuitable material or heat treatment can lead to wear or failure. Mixed intake and exhaust parts, damaged coatings and bent stems can escape a visual count. Quarantine suspect batches and compare them with the approved drawing and sample.

For sales as consumer products in the UK, you must not sell valves that you know or should have known are unsafe. Keep the material, dimensional and fit-check results together when reviewing a suspect batch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on engine valves from China?

The selected lines normally carry 2%. Qualifying manufacturing valves under 8409 99 00 70 have a 0.00 % suspension. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on these lines.

Do replacement diesel valves qualify for the suspension?

Do not assume so. The description specifies metal-alloy valves of HRC 20 to HRC 50 for manufacturing compression-ignition motor vehicle engines. Ask your broker to check the intended use and full description.

What should I send a Chinese engine valve factory?

Send the engine application, original part number, drawing or reference sample, alloy, heat treatment, coating and inspection tolerances. Identify intake and exhaust parts separately.

How do I check an engine valve shipment?

Check batch material and hardness records, measure the stem, head, seat and keeper grooves, inspect coatings and straightness, and test-fit samples. Match carton labels to the inspected batch.
