Sourcing engine valve guides from China
Engine valve guides from China carry 0% to 2% UK duty across the selected lines: ordinary petrol and diesel guides pay 2%, while aircraft lines pay 0%. Match classification to engine use, and check heavy-metal restrictions for car and small-van components. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine valve guides.

Valve-guide codes and UK duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8409 covers parts suitable solely or principally for engines of heading 8407 or 8408. Valve guides support the valve stem within the cylinder head. The table shows candidate lines by engine application, including specialist aircraft categories; confirm that the actual goods meet the selected description.
Ordinary petrol and diesel lines carry 2% duty for goods from China; aircraft lines carry 0%. The supplied records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls on these selected lines. The ordinary lines list suspensions for narrowly described other components. Those descriptions do not establish relief for valve guides; ask your customs broker to check before claiming a suspension.
Confirm the commodity code using the engine application, drawing and intended use. A guide is a separate component from the valve itself. See the engine valves guide for the wider heading. For pushrods, see our engine pushrod sourcing guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

| Valve guides for diesel and other piston engines, other | 8409 99 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Aircraft-engine valve guides for the specified duty-free aircraft category | 8409 10 00 20 | 0% | None |

Guide bore, head fit and material
Specify the engine identifier, original part number and drawing revision. Define intake and exhaust applications separately, material grade, hardness, overall length, outside diameter, bore diameter, shoulder position, chamfers and any lubrication features. State whether the bore is supplied finished or requires machining after installation, and agree the required fit with the cylinder head and valve stem.
Approve a measured first article and a trial installation in the intended cylinder head. Check the bore after fitting, rather than relying only on measurements of loose guides. Ask for material composition and processing records linked to the production batch.
Confirm with the relevant authority which restrictions on cadmium, lead, mercury and hexavalent chromium apply to materials and components for cars and small vans, including any exemptions for replacement or service parts for older vehicles. Check the actual alloy composition and any claimed exemption, especially where the supplier proposes a lead-containing alloy.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative workshop stock order of replacement petrol-engine valve guides under 8409 91 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,400. Duty at 2% is £68. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,468, so it is £693.60. Import taxes total £761.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £68 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: measure outside diameter, bore size, roundness, length and shoulder position against the approved drawing; check the agreed cylinder-head interference fit.
Material: match composition certificates and hardness results to the batch; confirm that intake and exhaust guide materials have not been substituted.
Installation: trial-fit samples, measure the installed bore and check valve-stem clearance after the agreed finishing operation; inspect for cracking and distortion.
Arrival: check bores for burrs, scoring and debris, and surfaces for corrosion or impact damage. Keep part numbers and batches separate and retain inspection records. Plan the scope through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A guide can match the catalogue part number yet have the wrong outside diameter, bore allowance or shoulder position. Excessive interference can distort the bore or crack the guide; insufficient interference can leave it loose. Incorrect stem clearance can cause sticking or excessive wear. Compare suspect parts with the drawing and repeat measurements after trial installation.
Mixed intake and exhaust variants, substituted alloys and an unfinished bore sold as ready to fit can make a batch unusable. Quarantine parts that fail the agreed checks. If guides are supplied as consumer replacement products, businesses importing or selling them in the UK are responsible for their safety. Retain the evidence supporting material quality and engine compatibility.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on engine valve guides from China?
The selected ordinary petrol and diesel lines carry 2% duty; aircraft lines carry 0%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded. Confirm the engine application and exact commodity code.
Do valve guides use the same commodity code as engine valves?
Do not assume so. The tariff has specific descriptions for valves. Ordinary petrol guides may fall under 8409 91 00 90 and diesel guides under 8409 99 00 90; confirm the actual application with your customs broker.
Should I order finished or unfinished valve-guide bores?
Agree this with the engine rebuilder before ordering. Specify the supplied bore, any allowance for machining after installation and the final valve-stem clearance. Measure a trial guide after fitting it into the intended head.
What documents should a valve-guide factory provide?
Request the approved drawing, first-article measurements, batch-linked material composition and hardness results, and inspection records. For car and small-van parts, check evidence supporting any heavy-metal exemption claimed.
