Sourcing engine pushrods from China
Engine pushrods from China carry 0% to 2% UK duty across the selected lines: ordinary petrol and diesel parts pay 2%, while aircraft lines pay 0%. Match the engine application and intended use to the code, and check applicable vehicle-material restrictions. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine pushrods.

Pushrod codes and UK import duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8409 covers parts suitable solely or principally for engines of headings 8407 or 8408. This guide concerns valve pushrods, rather than piston connecting rods. The selected petrol and diesel lines carry 2% duty from China; aircraft lines carry 0%. The aircraft line for aircraft imported duty free or built within the Community depends on that stated use.
The supplied snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls on the selected lines. The petrol and diesel other-parts lines list suspensions for narrowly described intake, cooling, cover or fuel-return components. Those descriptions do not establish suspension eligibility for pushrods, so budget for the ordinary duty unless your broker confirms relief against the full description.
Treat the table as classification candidates, rather than interchangeable codes. Confirm the commodity code using the engine application, drawing and intended use before ordering. For the wider heading and the mating rocker component, see the engine rocker arms guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other pushrods for spark-ignition piston engines | 8409 91 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Other pushrods for diesel piston engines | 8409 99 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Aircraft-engine pushrods for aircraft imported duty free or built within the Community | 8409 10 00 20 | 0% | None |
| Other aircraft-engine pushrods | 8409 10 00 90 | 0% | None |
Specify pushrod length, ends and oil feed
Identify the engine model, original part reference, drawing revision and intended duty. Specify effective working length and its measurement method, shaft diameter, straightness, and ball or cup geometry at each end. State whether the pushrod is solid or tubular, whether it carries oil, and the required oil-bore and outlet arrangement.
Agree shaft and tip materials, heat treatment, hardness measurement positions, surface finish and the method of attaching separate tips. Request batch-linked material and process records. Approve a measured sample and trial fit with the intended tappet and rocker before releasing production. Match any load or durability testing to the intended valve springs and engine operating conditions.
For car and small-van applications, check restrictions on cadmium, lead, mercury and hexavalent chromium, including applicable exemptions. Replacement parts for vehicles placed on the UK market before 1 July 2003 are excluded from this requirement. Ask for supporting material and coating evidence.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of replacement petrol-engine pushrods for an engine rebuilder under 8409 91 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,400. Duty at 2% is £68. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,468, so it is £693.60. Import taxes total £761.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £68 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Geometry: measure working length using the agreed end-contact method; check shaft diameter, straightness, ball radius, cup profile and contact finish against the approved drawing.
Materials and joints: match material and heat-treatment records to the batch; check specified hardness, cracks and the security of separately fitted tips using the agreed inspection method.
Oil feed and fit: check hollow pushrods for swarf, blocked bores and obstructed outlets. Trial-fit samples with the intended tappet and rocker, checking seating and clearance.
Arrival and identification: inspect for rust, bent shafts and damaged ends; compare part references and batch labels before mixing stock. Agree pre-shipment checks through the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
Overall length can match while effective working length differs because the ball or cup profile is wrong. This can alter valve clearance or hydraulic tappet preload. Bent shafts, loose tips, unsuitable heat treatment and blocked oil passages can cause wear or failure. Keep suspect batches separate and compare measurements, material records and trial-fit results with the approved sample.
For pushrods supplied as consumer products in Great Britain, general product safety rules require safety in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Keep supplier-identification records so the products can be traced to their origin. Link those records to the delivered batch and retain the inspection results when investigating a suspected defect.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on engine pushrods from China?
The selected petrol and diesel lines carry 2% duty; aircraft lines carry 0%, subject to their descriptions. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded on these lines.
Are pushrods classified as engine connecting rods?
Pushrods transfer valve-train motion; connecting rods join pistons to the crankshaft. Do not use the specific connecting-rod description merely because the supplier calls both products rods.
What should I specify when ordering replacement pushrods?
Provide the engine application, part reference, drawing, effective working length and measurement method, end geometry, shaft construction, material, heat treatment and oil-feed arrangement.
How do I check hollow engine pushrods?
Check working length, straightness, tip seating and material records. Inspect oil bores and outlets for swarf or blockage, and trial-fit samples with the intended tappet and rocker.
