How to export petrol engines from the UK to China

Match each engine or part to its Chinese tariff line, check CCC requirements for lighting products, and agree the import route before shipping. Duty and import VAT shape the buyer's landed cost. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands.

Classify each engine or part before agreeing the route

Petrol engines, ignition and electrical parts for vehicles need product-by-product classification: an engine, an ignition component and a lighting assembly cannot share one import assessment. Give the buyer specifications and intended use so its customs broker can confirm the Chinese tariff line and applicable CCC requirements. The largest UK export line was 84099100, spark-ignition engine parts, at £23.3m under that code in 2025.

Under HS 8407-8512 (11 subheadings): HMRC recorded £41.7m of UK goods exports to mainland China under 11 HS6 subheadings in 2025 (2024: £57.7m, -27.8%).

UK exports under HS 8407-8512 (11 subheadings): Exports to Hong Kong under the same codes were £10.8m. January to July 2026: £19.0m against £21.1m in the same months of 2025 (-9.7%). These totals describe UK exports under the listed codes, rather than sales of your particular component.

Check lighting certification before committing stock

The CCC reference table matches external vehicle lighting and light-signalling devices to 8512201000, and vehicle body reflective markings to 8512209000, with self-declaration evaluation. These are product-scope matches, so a tariff code alone does not settle whether your part needs CCC. Allow months, not weeks for certification approval; the Chinese authority decides.

From 1 January 2027, these lighting devices and reflective markings move to third-party certification and must have a CCC certificate and mark before import or other covered business use. Certification conversion must be completed by 31 December 2026. Build the applicable certification status into the supply agreement and shipment decision.

Price against the Chinese tariff line

The listed Chinese tariff lines have the MFN rates below. Import VAT has a standard rate of 13%, subject to exceptions and special rules, and is calculated on customs value plus customs duty plus consumption tax. The importer's customs broker or adviser confirms whether consumption tax applies to this product. Border taxes add to landed cost and therefore shape the price the importer can offer.

Prepare the UK export declaration around the actual shipment

For exports from England, Scotland or Wales, obtain a GB EORI and classify the goods using the correct UK commodity code. The online export declaration needs value, weight, packaging, destination, transport and invoice and packing list references. Give the carrier the invoice and any applicable export licences or certificates. Ensure the description identifies the actual engine or component so the Chinese buyer can reconcile it with its import classification.

Use retail cross-border e-commerce only for eligible lighting

The retail import list covers only part of this range: 85122010 vehicle lighting devices and 85122090 other lighting or visual signalling devices. Listed goods entering through bonded 1210 or direct 9610 channels receive personal-use supervision, without first-import licence, registration or filing requirements, subject to epidemic and emergency-risk exceptions. The limits are RMB 5,000 per transaction and RMB 26,000 annually per person.

Consumers must accept a risk notice covering differences from Chinese standards, possible absence of Chinese labels with an online Chinese e-label, and personal use without resale. The overseas business bears the main quality and safety responsibility and appoints a mainland-registered company for customs registration, truthful declarations and shared civil liability. Have the importer's customs broker confirm eligibility and applicable CCC treatment before choosing this route.

Find a buyer who can assess the exact parts

Ask prospective importers which components and vehicle applications they buy, how they will establish the Chinese tariff line, and how they will handle applicable CCC certification. Our own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands. If an importer has already approached you, our staff in China check that company before stock is sent or anything is signed.

We prepare registration and label work with licensed partners in China and check requirements with them. The importer of record and any required cross-border e-commerce agent remain licensed partners in China; the brand's own filings remain the brand's. Use our export-to-China service to arrange importer finding or checks.

Frequently asked questions

Do petrol engines and ignition parts all need CCC?

Check the actual product scope. The supplied CCC matches concern vehicle external lighting under 8512201000 and body reflective markings under 8512209000; the HS code alone does not determine coverage.

What changes for vehicle lighting in 2027?

From 1 January 2027, external vehicle lighting and body reflective markings require third-party CCC certification and the CCC mark. Certification conversion must be completed by 31 December 2026.

What duty should I allow for petrol engines?

Chinese tariff lines 84073410 and 84073420 each carry a 10% MFN rate. Confirm the exact line before quoting; import VAT also affects the buyer's landed cost.

Can my Chinese distributor resell parts imported through retail e-commerce?

Goods imported through the cross-border retail personal-use route may not be resold. The listed matches here are 85122010 and 85122090, rather than the whole engine and ignition range.
