Sourcing engine intake manifolds from China

Buy against an engine code and a complete assembly list, not a vehicle-model photo. Approve a head-and-gasket trial fit, a leak-test record and flap/actuator operation before bulk release. Budget 2% duty on the selected ordinary replacement-part codes; a matching exterior does not prove that the mechanism or installation setup matches.

A car engine compartment with an intake manifold.

Where to look: Tangxia suppliers and Automechanika Shanghai

Ruian Jinhua Auto & Motorcycle Parts lists intake manifolds and gives a Tangxia contact address. Treat that catalogue as a sourcing lead, then establish where moulding, machining, assembly and testing actually happen; a contact address does not establish the manufacturing site.

Automechanika Shanghai, held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, includes powertrain components within its parts and components section. Use the exhibitor search to arrange meetings around your engine applications. Send the part-number list beforehand and ask suppliers to bring the actual assembly, its material identification and its test records.

For comparing competing assemblies, use our sample comparison service. Ask each candidate to quote the same scope: bare manifold, manifold with flap mechanism, or complete assembly with actuator, sensors and seals.

Make the application sheet the purchasing document

Create a separate line for each engine code and original part-number revision. Record the cylinder-head interface, port geometry, bolt pattern, gasket grooves, throttle connection and sensor connections. List every included actuator, flap shaft, linkage, bracket and seal. Use the product specification guide to turn these requirements into an agreed drawing and assembly list.

Require a trial fit using the intended head, gasket and connected components. Photograph port alignment and gasket seating before tightening. Agree the tightening procedure and dimensional acceptance criteria with the application engineer; do not invent a universal flange-flatness tolerance.

If you are also changing the mating head, coordinate the interfaces through the cylinder-head sourcing guide. Retain an approved manifold-and-gasket reference set, rather than approving the casting or moulding alone.

Inspect the mechanism, then separate defects from installation faults

Motorservice identifies blocked flaps, worn shaft bearings and worn or bent linkage as possible causes of actuator-related complaints. It also warns that a replacement servo motor may need teaching-in. Specify checks for free movement, linkage play, flap retention and the correct actuator version; request application-specific installation and learning instructions.

For sealing acceptance, agree a leak-test fixture, test medium, pressure or vacuum, duration and permissible leakage for the actual application. Require results traceable to the shipment. Inspect gasket seats, moulded seams, inserts and sensor bosses; record the location of any leakage rather than accepting a bare 'passed' statement.

A useful warranty distinction comes from Motorservice's Mercedes-Benz W211 bulletin: oil dripping from a leaking engine-ventilation line can damage the plastic cam control mechanism. For that application, include an installation reminder to inspect the ventilation line. Do not automatically attribute a repeated mechanism failure to the replacement manifold.

Agree the measurement records, mechanism checks, leak-test evidence and packaging checks through the quality inspection guide. Keep different engine variants separately identified throughout packing.

UK materials rules and relevant standards

For manifolds intended for cars and small vans, the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulations 2003, as amended, are relevant UK legislation. The importer placing the component on the UK market is responsible for compliance. Cadmium, lead, mercury and hexavalent chromium are restricted, subject to applicable exemptions. The materials restriction excludes replacement or service parts for vehicles placed on the UK market before 1 July 2003. Ask for evidence covering the body, metal inserts and coatings, including the basis of any claimed exemption.

For applicable vehicle plastic components weighing more than 100 grams, Schedule 2 lists ISO 1043-1, ISO 1043-2 and ISO 11469 for material identification and marking. Check the moulded material marking against the declared resin and reinforcement; photograph it in the inspection report.

For runner cleanliness, have the application engineer set particulate-contamination limits, an inspection method and reporting requirements in the purchase specification.

UK duty: classify the exact replacement assembly

The table covers selected ordinary automotive replacement-part lines, checked in the UK Trade Tariff on 15 October 2026. Both show 2% third-country duty and 20% standard import VAT. Check current China-specific anti-dumping measures before shipment.

These are candidate classifications, not a ruling for every manifold. Send the engine application, material, drawing and assembly contents to your customs agent using the commodity-code guide. Obtain confirmation before shipment and check measures again for the declaration date. The calculation below uses the ordinary rate without suspension relief.

Worked duty and VAT example

Hypothetical figures, not a quotation: petrol-engine replacement manifolds correctly classified under 8409910090 cost £3,000, with £400 freight and insurance to the UK border. Assume no other customs-value additions. Customs value is £3,400; duty at 2% is £68.

Assume a further £100 transport charge to the first UK destination and no other incidental expenses. The import VAT base is £3,400 + £68 + £100 = £3,568. At the standard 20% rate, import VAT is £713.60. Duty plus import VAT totals £781.60. The UK import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.

Before releasing the bulk order, require the approved application sheet, sample-fit record, agreed inspection results, materials evidence and confirmed customs classification. Keep the hypothetical tax calculation separate from the supplier's commercial quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Is a matching original part number enough?

Use it as a starting reference. Also approve the revision, fitted components, mating interfaces and installation instructions through a documented sample trial.

Can an actuator fault mean the manifold is faulty?

Yes. Motorservice identifies blocked flaps, shaft-bearing wear and linkage faults as possible underlying causes. A replacement servo motor may also require teaching-in.

What UK duty should I budget?

The two selected ordinary replacement-part codes show 2%. Confirm the exact classification and current measures before declaring the goods.
