Sourcing diesel pickup trucks from China
Diesel pickup trucks classified in the selected goods-vehicle lines carry 10% UK duty from China, with no variation between new and used vehicles. Proof of vehicle approval is needed for registration and taxation, so settle the approval route before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources diesel pickup trucks.

UK duty on diesel pickup trucks
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8704 covers motor vehicles for transporting goods. The selected diesel-only pickup lines cover gross vehicle weights not exceeding 5 tonnes, split by engine capacity and whether the vehicle is new or used. All carry 10% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension. Import VAT is normally 20%.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import control to these lines and waste import control to the used lines. Official guidance includes vehicle air-conditioning within pre-charged equipment; waste shipment controls apply when the material is waste. Confirm the applicable refrigerant and waste requirements with your customs broker before shipping from China. The records also list cultural-object export licensing and, for used vehicles, waste export controls; confirm these separately if re-exporting.
Give your broker the cab and load-bed specification, gross vehicle weight, engine capacity and new or used status. Confirm the commodity code before ordering rather than accepting the supplier's description alone. For the wider heading, see diesel tipper trucks. For tanker purchases, see our road tanker truck sourcing guide. For vehicle transporters, see sourcing diesel car transporter trucks.

Cab, load bed and approval specification
Fix the cab layout, seating, right-hand-drive specification, engine and gearbox, driven wheels, load-bed dimensions, payload and towing needs in the purchase specification. Ask for payload at the supplied specification, including the canopy, towbar and other fitted accessories. Agree corrosion protection, spare parts and who handles warranty repairs. For a flatbed option, see our diesel flatbed truck sourcing guide.
Proof of vehicle approval is needed to register and tax the imported vehicle. Before ordering, agree the approval route and obtain documents matching the actual model and supplied configuration. Ask for the emissions and safety documentation supporting that route, rather than accepting a certificate for a different version.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a new diesel pickup truck under 8704 21 91 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,500. Duty at 10% is £3,150. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £34,650, so it is £6,930. Import taxes total £10,080; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,150 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match each vehicle identification number, engine specification and configuration to the invoice and approval documents; repeat the identity check on arrival.
Load bed: measure usable space, check tailgate locks, tie-down points and canopy seals, and weigh a sample to assess the stated payload.
Running condition: check cold starting, warning lights, diagnostic faults, gearbox operation, steering, brakes and fluid leaks in an agreed test.
Arrival condition: photograph bodywork and underbody damage, inspect corrosion protection, tyres and battery condition, and reconcile keys, tools and spare parts with the dispatch record.

What goes wrong
A catalogue vehicle can differ from the supplied pickup in cab layout, gearbox, lighting or load-bed equipment. A canopy or other accessory can also reduce usable payload. Record the agreed configuration and check the actual vehicles before loading; brochure photographs leave too much unresolved.
Approval paperwork for another model or configuration can leave registration unresolved after arrival. Thin underbody protection, fluid leaks and transit damage are separate acceptance problems. Agree defect recording, repair responsibility and parts support before paying the balance.
