Sourcing diesel tipper trucks from China
Diesel tipper trucks from China carry 0% to 10% UK duty: qualifying off-highway dumpers pay 0%, while ordinary diesel road tippers pay 10%. For a new road truck, settle the vehicle approval route before ordering; approval must match the finished specification. Cambridge China Bridge sources diesel tipper trucks.

Duty depends on the truck, not the tipping body
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 9 October 2026, heading 8704 covers motor vehicles for transporting goods. The selected diesel tipper lines carry 0% duty for dumpers designed for off-highway use and 10% for ordinary road goods vehicles from China. These lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Import VAT is additional.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls; government guidance includes vehicles with air-conditioning within pre-charged equipment. Ask your customs broker to confirm the refrigerant-related requirements for your China shipment. Waste import controls also appear on used and off-highway lines. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste; confirm the classification and applicable requirements with your broker before shipping. For refrigerated vehicles, see our refrigerated delivery truck sourcing guide.
Gross vehicle weight, engine capacity, new or used condition and off-highway design determine the relevant line. A tipping body alone does not settle classification. Confirm the commodity code using the complete vehicle specification. The tariff also lists cultural-object and waste export controls, which your broker should check if the vehicle will later be exported. See the wider goods-vehicle guide. For tanker purchases, see our road tanker truck sourcing guide. For refuse collection vehicles, see our refuse truck sourcing guide.

Specify the chassis, payload and tipping system
State whether you need a road-going tipper or a dedicated site dumper. Specify right-hand drive, gross vehicle weight, axle arrangement, engine and transmission, tyre specification and payload with the finished body fitted. Ask for actual unladen weight rather than treating body volume as carrying capacity. For a flatbed option, see our diesel flatbed truck sourcing guide. For vehicle-carrying applications, see sourcing diesel car transporter trucks.
Agree body dimensions, steel grade and thickness, floor reinforcement, tailgate arrangement, tipping direction, hydraulic cylinder, pump and power take-off. Include a body support for maintenance, controls and operating instructions in the purchase specification. Agree spare seals, hoses, filters and replacement parts.
For a new road truck, settle the GB type approval, small series approval or individual approval route before ordering, as explained in the published goods-vehicle guide. Proof of approval is needed to register and tax an imported vehicle. Ask for documents matching the chassis and finished tipper body, including any conversion.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 5 new heavy diesel tipper trucks under 8704 23 91 00, invoiced at £400,000 free on board, with £30,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £430,000. Duty at 10% is £43,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £473,000, so it is £94,600. Import taxes total £137,600; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £43,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: compare chassis and engine identifiers, manufacturer plates and approval documents with the order; confirm the finished body and axle specification.
Payload: weigh the completed truck, compare its unladen weight with the agreed payload calculation, and check tyre and axle ratings against the specification.
Tipping gear: have a competent operator demonstrate raising, holding and lowering the body under an agreed test load; inspect cylinders, hoses, hinges, tailgate locks and the maintenance support.
Arrival condition: record hydraulic leaks, cracked welds, body distortion and corrosion; check brakes, steering, lights and starting before acceptance. Use a vehicle-specific inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A heavy body can consume the payload promised for the bare chassis. Weak subframe attachment, poorly aligned hinges or unsuitable hydraulic components can leave a truck that drives but cannot tip reliably. Record the agreed load test and inspect the body mountings before shipment.
An approval document for the chassis may leave questions about the finished tipper conversion. Resolve those questions before ordering. For used trucks, ask for condition records and evidence of intended reuse; do not assume that describing a vehicle as second-hand settles whether waste controls apply.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on diesel tipper trucks from China?
The selected lines carry 10% for ordinary diesel road tippers and 0% for dumpers designed for off-highway use. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is shown. Import VAT is additional.
Does a Chinese diesel tipper need vehicle approval?
For a new road truck, agree the appropriate approval route before ordering. Proof of approval is needed to register and tax an imported vehicle; check that the documents cover the finished tipper specification.
Does fitting a tipping body make a truck an off-highway dumper?
Do not classify it from the body alone. Give your broker the complete chassis, engine, weight and design specification so the road-vehicle or off-highway line can be confirmed.
What should I test before accepting a diesel tipper?
Check finished payload, body mountings, welds, hydraulic leaks, tailgate locks and controlled tipping under an agreed load. Compare vehicle identifiers and documents, then record arrival condition.
