Sourcing diesel car transporter trucks from China
Diesel car transporter trucks from China carry 10% UK duty across the relevant new and used diesel lines. For Great Britain, vehicle approval is needed before registration unless exempt. Specify the completed transporter, usable payload and loading geometry. Cambridge China Bridge sources diesel car transporter trucks.

UK duty on diesel car transporter trucks
Heading 8704 covers motor vehicles for transporting goods. This guide concerns diesel trucks carrying cars on their own decks. Classification depends on gross vehicle weight, engine capacity where relevant, and whether the truck is new or used. The table selects common transporter configurations. See the diesel flatbed trucks guide for the wider heading.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant diesel transporter lines carried 10% duty on goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension. Import VAT is normally 20%. The snapshot also lists cultural-object and waste export controls; these are export entries.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls, and waste import controls to used lines. Imported fluorinated-gas equipment must be labelled correctly, including empty equipment. Ask your customs broker to confirm refrigerant, quota and declaration requirements, and whether a used truck is waste. For notified waste imports into England, the exporter applies to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent. Confirm the commodity code against the completed truck's documents.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

| Used diesel car transporter, gross weight up to 5 tonnes, engine over 2,500 cm³ | 8704 21 39 00 | 10% | None |
| New diesel car transporter, gross weight over 5 tonnes and up to 20 tonnes | 8704 22 91 00 | 10% | None |
| Used diesel car transporter, gross weight over 5 tonnes and up to 20 tonnes | 8704 22 99 00 | 10% | None |
| New diesel car transporter, gross weight over 20 tonnes | 8704 23 91 00 | 10% | None |

Specify the completed transporter and loading geometry
Fix the chassis model, diesel engine, steering position, deck layout, usable payload and axle loading for your intended car mix. Ask for the completed vehicle's weight record, rather than a bare-chassis payload claim. Specify ramp width, approach angle, ground clearance, wheelbase range, tyre track and access for wheel straps. For moving decks, agree hydraulic controls, mechanical locks and the stowed travelling position.
Unless exempt, approval is needed before registration in Great Britain. Agree the approval route for the completed transporter before ordering, and check that the documents cover its body configuration. Separately, check operator licensing for the intended business: goods vehicles above a certain weight require an operator's licence. Vehicles carried on car transporters must be restrained for transport, so specify suitable anchor points and restraint equipment.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: A new diesel car transporter truck for a vehicle delivery business, illustrative order under 8704 23 91 00, invoiced at £185,000 free on board, with £9,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £194,500. Duty at 10% is £19,450. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £213,950, so it is £42,790. Import taxes total £62,240; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £19,450 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and documents: match chassis identifiers, engine details and body configuration to the order and approval documents before shipment and on arrival.
Payload and fit: check completed vehicle weight and loading positions against the intended cars; demonstrate ramp clearance and access to restraint points.
Decks and hydraulics: inspect welds, corrosion protection, pins, hoses and leaks; demonstrate deck movement, locks, ramp retention and controls under the agreed test conditions.
Restraints and handover: inspect anchor points, straps and wheel stops against the specification; check lighting, tyres, brakes, manuals and the agreed spare-parts list.

What goes wrong
A deck can accommodate the advertised car count while the completed truck lacks the usable payload for your actual vehicles. Low cars can ground on ramps, wide tyres can obstruct strap access, and moving decks can foul the cab or carried cars. Require a loading demonstration with representative vehicles before accepting the design.
Approval documents for a different body configuration leave the buyer with an unresolved registration problem. Used trucks also need close checks for structural repairs and hydraulic wear. A seriously damaged vehicle cannot be registered and taxed. Resolve document mismatches and condition concerns before shipment, then repeat the physical checks on arrival.
