Duty on diesel flatbed trucks
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8704 covers motor vehicles for transporting goods. The ordinary diesel flatbed lines shown carry 10% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension. Import VAT is added. The diesel tipper truck guide covers another goods-vehicle body within this heading.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import control, plus waste import control on the used lines shown. Pre-charged equipment includes vehicle air-conditioning. Ask for the refrigerant and charge details, and have your customs broker confirm the applicable requirement for your China shipment. For used trucks, ask the broker to confirm whether waste controls apply before shipment. The data also lists cultural-object licensing and waste controls for exports.
Classification depends on gross vehicle weight, engine capacity and whether the truck is new or used. Give your broker the completed vehicle specification, rather than only the chassis brochure, and confirm the commodity code. For tax calculations, see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the completed flatbed and its payload
Specify deck length and width, floor material, crossmember layout, headboard, tie-down points and any removable sides. State the intended loads and loading method, including forklift access. Request the completed truck's unladen weight, gross vehicle weight and axle ratings, then check the available payload with the body and accessories fitted. For vehicle-carrying applications, see sourcing diesel car transporter trucks.
Proof of vehicle approval is needed to register and tax an imported vehicle. Before ordering, agree the approval route for the completed flatbed, who supplies the matching documents and how body changes will be assessed. Specify steering position, UK-pattern headlamps and a miles per hour speedometer. Agree the engine, gearbox, emissions documentation, spare parts list and warranty arrangements.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: A new diesel flatbed truck for a business fleet, with illustrative FOB and freight values under 8704 22 91 00, invoiced at £43,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £45,500. Duty at 10% is £4,550. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £50,050, so it is £10,010. Import taxes total £14,560; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £4,550 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the chassis identification and engine details to the invoice, specification and approval documents.
Deck and body: measure the usable deck, inspect welds and body mounts, and check headboard fixings, tie-down points and side latches against the agreed drawings.
Payload: weigh the completed truck and compare its recorded weight and axle ratings with the supplier's payload calculation.
Arrival condition: inspect corrosion protection, deck distortion, tyres, fluid leaks and battery condition; arrange a controlled check of brakes, steering, lights and warning indicators.

What goes wrong
A chassis brochure can conceal the weight of the finished deck, reducing usable payload. Body substitutions can leave different mounts, weaker tie-down points or a deck that does not suit your loading equipment. Record the agreed construction in drawings and inspect the completed truck before shipment.
Approval documents may describe a different vehicle configuration, while corrosion or transport damage may be missed in sales photographs. Compare the paperwork with the actual truck and retain arrival photographs. If a used vehicle is subject to waste notification controls, the exporter must seek consent from the competent authority in the country of dispatch; confirm the route with your broker before loading in China.
