Benzotriazole duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 9 October 2026, heading 2933 covers heterocyclic compounds with nitrogen hetero-atoms only. The named benzotriazole line is 2933 99 80 81, with chemical identity 95-14-7. Goods from China carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension listed. The table shows alternative physical forms of the same substance under the same code.

The tariff attaches dangerous-chemical and waste export-control flags. HSE states that there are no PIC notification obligations for imports. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. Ask your customs broker to confirm the relevance of both flags to your shipment from China, especially recovered or off-specification material.

Give your broker the chemical identity, composition and physical form. Have formulated solutions and blends classified separately rather than assuming the named substance code applies. Specify identity, purity and dissolution

Specify benzotriazole rather than accepting an unspecified triazole inhibitor. Agree assay, water content, insoluble matter, impurity profile and physical form, together with the analytical methods. Test a sample in your intended formulation for dissolution, colour and corrosion-inhibition performance before approving bulk supply.

The customs value is £42,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £42,500, so it is £8,500. Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the container label, purchase specification and certificate of analysis with the agreed benzotriazole identity.

Batch analysis: independently check assay, moisture and impurities against the agreed methods; retain a traceable sample.

Application trial: check dissolution, insoluble residue and colour in the intended formulation, then compare corrosion performance with the approved sample.

Packing: inspect liners, closures and seals for damage or moisture entry; match every container's batch marking to its certificate and check hazard labels against the safety data sheet.

What goes wrong

A certificate stating only assay leaves moisture, insoluble residue and unwanted impurities unchecked. A substituted triazole, a blend sold as the named substance, or a change in physical form can make the approved formulation trial unrepresentative. Damp material and damaged liners can also create handling and dissolution problems.

Agree acceptance criteria before production and investigate any mismatch before releasing stock. Check the manufacturing site and batch records rather than relying on a seller's generic certificate. Keep chemical identity, analytical results and importer responsibilities together in the order file.
