Sourcing pyrimidine from China

The pyrimidine-family lines shown here carry 0% UK duty for goods from China, with no listed trade remedy. Chemical importers must settle UK REACH registration where applicable and ensure correct labels and packaging before GB sale. Specify the exact compound and batch tests. Duty on named pyrimidine compounds

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected pyrimidine-family lines under heading 2933 carry 0% duty for goods from China. They have no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension. The heading covers heterocyclic compounds with nitrogen hetero-atoms only; its pyrimidine branch also includes piperazine compounds.

The selected codes carry export controls on dangerous chemicals and waste. These are export measures attached by the tariff; ask your customs broker to confirm their relevance to the transaction, including any later return shipment. Separately, check whether the substance is GB PIC-listed and whether annual quantity reporting applies.

Do not assign a named derivative's code to every product sold as pyrimidine. Give the broker the chemical name, substance identifier, composition and purity, using the commodity code guide. For the wider heading, see the pyridine sourcing guide.

Specify the pyrimidine compound and impurity profile

Write the full chemical name and structure into the purchase specification. For substituted pyrimidines, identify the positions of the substituents rather than accepting a shortened product name. State whether you want a single substance or a solution, and agree assay, related impurities, residual solvents, water content and the analytical methods.

For ordinary chemical imports into Great Britain, ask HSE to confirm when UK REACH registration is required and whether a relevant exemption or the manufacturer's UK-based only representative covers the obligation. Registration is per substance and legal entity. Ask HSE to confirm the safety data sheet requirements for hazardous substances; ensure correct labels and packaging before GB sale.

If the intended product is a pesticide, it must be authorised before it can be used, sold, supplied or stored. Buying a named substance at zero duty does not settle that requirement. Clarify the intended application before ordering pirimiphos-methyl or benzyladenine.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 kg of 5-bromo-2,4-dichloropyrimidine; FOB and freight values are illustrative under 2933 59 95 87, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £42,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £42,500, so it is £8,500. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the container label, purchase specification and batch analysis certificate; have the receiving laboratory confirm the named compound against a reference standard.

Batch results: check assay and related impurities using the agreed method, alongside residual solvents and water content; retain a sample linked to the delivered batch.

Packaging: inspect seals, liners and containers for damage or leakage, and match lot markings to the packing list and safety data sheet.

Process suitability: compare dissolution, appearance and handling behaviour with the approved sample before releasing the batch into production.

What goes wrong

A shortened pyrimidine name can conceal a different substituted compound. A passing assay can also hide an impurity that matters to your reaction. Other failures include a certificate copied from another batch, undeclared solvent, damaged liners and a change of manufacturing site.

Hold discrepant material apart from released stock, compare the laboratory results with the agreed specification and obtain the manufacturer's explanation before use. Agree how the supplier reports process changes and investigates failed batches. A sample that works in your process is useful evidence, but repeat orders still need batch checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on pyrimidine compounds from China?

The selected named pyrimidine-family lines carry 0% duty, with no listed trade remedy or suspension. Confirm the exact substance's commodity code before using that rate.

Do I need UK REACH registration for pyrimidine imports?

For ordinary chemical imports into GB, ask HSE to confirm the applicable UK REACH registration threshold, relevant exemptions and whether the manufacturer's UK-based only representative covers your imports.

What should a pyrimidine batch certificate show?

The exact compound, batch identity, assay, related impurities, residual solvents and water content, with results and methods matching your agreed specification.

Can I sell imported pyrimidine compounds as pesticides?

A pesticide product must be authorised before it can be used, sold, supplied or stored. Zero import duty does not establish pesticide authorisation.
