Identify the substance before choosing the code

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2933 covers heterocyclic compounds with nitrogen hetero-atoms only. The supplied extract names imidazole-related compounds but does not name neat imidazole. The supplied unfused-imidazole-ring lines carry 0% or 6% duty for goods from China. The related substances selected in the table carry 0%, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The benzimidazolone line also records a 0.00 % autonomous suspension excluding mixtures, preparations and products made from different components containing the substance.

Specify imidazole identity, assay and water content

Specify whether you want neat imidazole or a named derivative. Agree the identity test, assay method, impurity profile, water content, residual solvents and acceptable appearance. Ask whether the assay is reported on an as-received or dry basis. Match the manufacturing site and batch number to the certificate of analysis, and test a sample in your intended process.

For Great Britain, settle the UK REACH registration position before ordering. Confirm with HSE whether registration is required for your annual import quantity and whether you are responsible as importer or the manufacturer's only representative can cover the imports. Substances and mixtures supplied on the GB market must be classified and labelled under the chemical classification rules. Hazardous chemicals supplied for workplace use require a safety data sheet.

If the exact substance is PIC-listed, imports into Great Britain require annual quantity reporting to HSE, although PIC import notification is not required. Waste shipment controls apply when the material is waste. For material from China whose waste status or applicable controls are uncertain, confirm the requirement with your broker and the relevant waste authority before shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 kg of the named imidazole carboxylate intermediate under 2933 29 90 15, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £42,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £42,500, so it is £8,500. Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the order, drum labels, safety data sheet and batch certificate; use the agreed laboratory test to distinguish imidazole from a derivative or substituted material.

Assay and impurities: verify the delivered batch against the agreed method and impurity limits, including residual solvents where relevant to your process.

Moisture and condition: test water content and inspect for caking, discolouration, damaged liners and evidence of moisture entering the packaging.

Packing and records: check seals, batch traceability and label consistency before releasing stock; retain a sample and record discrepancies. Use the inspection guide to prepare the brief.

What goes wrong

A quotation may describe an imidazole derivative simply as imidazole, or show a purity result calculated on a different basis from your specification. A copied certificate can hide a changed impurity profile. Moisture ingress and caking can also leave material unsuitable for the intended process despite a satisfactory supplier sample.

Hold discrepant batches apart while identity, assay and water content are checked. Agree how the supplier must report changes to the process, manufacturing site or analytical method. Keep tariff classification separate from product approval: a related compound's duty rate does not establish the rate for your imidazole order.
