Duty by material
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, bathroom accessories are classified by material. Its search index maps porcelain soap dishes, toothbrush holders and towel rails to 6911 90 00 00 at 12%, and a ceramic soap dispenser to 6912 00 89 00 at 6%. Sanitary ware of iron or steel (7324 90 00 90) and of copper or brass (7418 20 00 90) carried 0%, aluminium sanitary ware (7615 20 00 00) 6%, plastic hygienic or toilet articles (3924 90 00 90) 6%, and base-metal hat-racks, hat-pegs, brackets and similar fixtures (8302 50 00 00) 0%.
The ceramic tableware anti-dumping duty applies to tableware and kitchenware lines, not to these toilet-article lines, and the plastic line carrying anti-dumping duty (3924 90 00 10) is for ironing boards. Safety and materials
Accessories sold to consumers must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, so check that glass shelves are toughened and marked, edges are finished and fixings carry the load claimed.
Stainless steel accessories are often sold as grade 304 but made from lower-nickel 201, which rusts sooner in bathrooms, so check the grade with a handheld analyser. For chrome-plated brass and zinc parts, ask for a neutral salt spray test to ISO 9227 at an agreed number of hours.
Specifying accessories
Specify material and grade, finish (polished chrome, brushed, matt black, powder coat), plating thickness, dimensions and load rating, pump output and bottle volume for dispensers, fixing method (screws and plugs or adhesive), a matching set of finishes across pieces, and retail packaging with fitting instructions.
Worked duty example
An invented example rather than a quote: 2,000 ceramic soap dispensers, commodity code 6912 00 89 00, bought for £7,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance, so £7,600 is the value customs works from. Duty at the 6% rate for ceramic soap dispensers is £456. VAT at 20% applies to £8,056, so £1,611.20. A VAT-registered buyer usually recovers the VAT, so the border adds £456 to the landed cost. Inspection checklist
Finish: compare colour and gloss across every piece of a set, and check plating for pits, peeling and blistering.
Function: test dispenser pumps for output and leaks, and load-test shelves, rails and hooks to the stated rating.
Materials and packing: check steel grade on samples, the fixings supplied, and drop-test retail packs.
What goes wrong
Bathroom accessory orders fail on finish, corrosion and fixings. Pieces of a set arrive in different shades, plating peels or rusts within months, 201 steel is supplied as 304, dispensers leak, and adhesive fixings do not hold on tiles.
