Duty and food-contact import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, heading 3924 covers plastic tableware, kitchenware, other household articles and hygienic or toilet articles. This guide concerns reusable food storage containers. The table repeats the ordinary kitchenware code for different container types rather than suggesting that each shape has a separate code.

The relevant kitchenware lines carry 6% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation: a compliance declaration for ordinary plastic kitchenware and a separate declaration control for food-contact polyamide or melamine parts. Confirm the applicable documents and clearance procedure with your customs broker. Official guidance identifies designated border control posts for the controlled kitchenware.

Give your broker the composition of the body, lid and food-contact parts, photographs and intended use before confirming the commodity code. Containers used to pack goods for transport need separate classification advice. For the wider range, see homeware and kitchenware.

Specify the body, lid and intended food use

Specify the resin for the body and lid, seal material, usable capacity, external dimensions, wall thickness, closure style and nesting arrangement. State which foods the container will hold and whether it is intended for refrigeration, freezing, reheating or dishwasher cleaning. Agree trials for each claimed use before approving production.

Plastic food packaging is subject to special rules, and written compliance evidence is required. Ask the supplier for food-contact documentation for the finished container, including its lid and seal. Match the paperwork to the actual material, colour and intended use. Arrange testing and certification against the agreed specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 reusable plastic food storage containers; illustrative order under 3924 10 00 90, invoiced at £7,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,600. Duty at 6% is £456. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,056, so it is £1,611.20. Import taxes total £2,067.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £456 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Materials and documents: compare the delivered body, lid and seal with the approved specification and supporting food-contact paperwork.

Closure: fill samples, fit lids and check leakage in the agreed orientations; inspect clips, hinges and seal seating after repeated opening.

Use trials: check warping, cracking, staining and lid fit after the agreed heating, cooling and washing trials.

Packing: check matched lids, complete sets, nesting, scuffing and carton protection. Use the quality inspection guide to agree shipment checks.

What goes wrong

A lid can fit the approved sample but leak on production boxes because the rim or seal changes. Thin bodies can distort during reheating, clips can crack, and nested boxes can arrive scratched or difficult to separate. Test production samples with their own lids rather than relying on the showroom set.

A generic resin report may describe a different colour, lid or use condition. Treat an unexplained material change as a reason to review the documents and repeat the agreed trials before shipment. Keep the approved sample, specification and document references together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on plastic food storage containers from China?

The relevant kitchenware lines carry 6% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no listed trade remedy or suspension. Confirm the code from the complete material specification.

Do plastic food containers need food-contact paperwork?

Yes. Plastic food packaging requires written compliance evidence. Ask for documents matching the finished container, lid, seal and intended food use.

Does a polyamide lid change the import checks?

Food-contact polyamide or melamine parts can bring the container within the tariff's additional declaration control. Confirm the documents and border procedure with your customs broker before shipping.

How do I check whether the containers leak?

Agree a filled-container test using production bodies, lids and seals. Check the intended transport orientations and repeat opening, washing and cooling before checking the seal again.
