Sourcing ash vacuum cleaners from China
Ash vacuum cleaners from China carry UK duty of 0% to 2%, depending on motor power, receptacle capacity and classification. Electrical safety still applies: specify cold-ash use and check the finished model's compliance evidence before selling in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources ash vacuum cleaners.

Duty by motor power and ash capacity
Heading 8508 covers vacuum cleaners and their parts. An ash vacuum with its own motor falls within the power and receptacle split: up to 1,500 W and up to 20 litres carries 2% duty; exceeding either threshold carries 0%. Confirm the classification of a passive ash separator rather than assuming that every ash bucket belongs here.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the supplied lines carry duty of 0% to 2% for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls are recorded. These tariff entries do not replace product compliance checks.
Confirm the motor rating, receptacle capacity and whether the shipment contains complete machines or separate parts using finding your commodity code. See the wider vacuum cleaner guide for other product types and UK import duty and VAT for tax calculation. See our wet and dry vacuum sourcing guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorised ash vacuums up to 1,500 W with receptacle up to 20 litres | 8508 11 00 00 | 2% | None |
| Motorised ash vacuums exceeding either power or receptacle threshold | 8508 19 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other ash vacuum cleaners without a self-contained motor, if classified here | 8508 60 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Ash vacuum cleaner parts, where classified as vacuum cleaner parts | 8508 70 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify cold-ash collection and filtration
Write a cold-ash specification covering intended fireplace or stove use, excluded materials, metal canister construction, hose lining, nozzle material, filter arrangement and replacement filters. Ask the factory to explain how fine ash is kept away from the motor. A metal bucket alone does not demonstrate that the hose, seals or filter can tolerate heat.
Agree an ash-loading test with the supplier and compare airflow before loading, during collection and after filter cleaning. Record the test material and method. Ask for evidence behind any heat-resistance or fine-dust claim, and avoid advertising hot-ash collection without supporting tests.
For Great Britain, check electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility and restricted-substance compliance for the finished model. Importers must be able to evidence restricted-substance compliance when requested by OPSS. Electrical equipment must come with easily understandable English instructions. Check electrical waste responsibilities too; use testing and certification support to establish the model's compliance scope.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 500 cold-ash vacuum cleaners under 8508 11 00 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Filter seals: check seating, lid gasket compression and the route around the filter for ash bypass.
Canister and fittings: check sharp edges, lid clips, handle attachment, hose retention and nozzle fit against the approved sample.
Loaded operation: check ash collection, visible dust escape, airflow loss and filter cleaning using the agreed cold-ash test.
Documents and spares: match model identification to reports and instructions; check cold-ash warnings, supplied filters and replacement-filter fit.

What goes wrong
Fine ash can expose a poorly seated filter or lid seal that an empty-machine demonstration misses. A filter may clog quickly, while repeated removal can distort its sealing edge. Inspect after loading and cleaning, rather than accepting an unloaded suction demonstration.
Another risk is treating an ash vacuum as an ordinary floor vacuum when selecting compliance tests. Do not assume that the floor-vacuum ecodesign limits settle the scope for a dedicated ash collector. Give the testing provider its actual intended use, construction and instructions before agreeing the test programme.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on ash vacuum cleaners from China?
Duty is 2% for self-contained motor models up to 1,500 W with a receptacle up to 20 litres. Other motorised models and classified vacuum cleaner parts carry 0%, with no trade remedies recorded in the supplied tariff data.
Can an ash vacuum cleaner collect hot embers?
Specify cold-ash use. Do not treat a metal canister as proof of hot-ember suitability. Ask for supporting tests before accepting any hot-ash claim.
What should I test before ordering ash vacuums?
Test fine-ash collection, filter and lid sealing, airflow loss under loading, hose retention and filter cleaning. Match the tested construction to the production specification.
Do imported ash vacuums need English instructions?
Yes. For electrical equipment sold in Great Britain, the importer must ensure that instructions are in easily understandable English. Include the agreed cold-ash use and cleaning guidance.
