Sourcing mattress vacuum cleaners from China

Mattress vacuum cleaners from China fall within a 0% to 2% UK duty range; typical small self-contained-motor models pay 2%. Mains models need electrical safety compliance, with technical documents and a declaration matching the product. Cambridge China Bridge sources mattress vacuum cleaners.

Duty by motor power and dust capacity

Heading 8508 covers vacuum cleaners and their parts. Mattress vacuum cleaners with a self-contained electric motor, rated power not exceeding 1,500 W and a dust bag or receptacle not exceeding 20 litres fall under 8508 11 00 00. Both corded and cordless machines can meet this description.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the duty for goods from China was 2% on that line and 0% on the other lines shown. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. The alternative complete-machine lines are classification references, rather than the usual choice for a small handheld mattress cleaner.

Confirm the motor arrangement, rated power, dust capacity and whether the shipment contains complete machines or separate parts before selecting a commodity code. See the wider vacuum cleaner guide for the heading and UK import duty and VAT for the tax calculation.

Specify mattress pickup and lamp safeguards

Specify corded or cordless operation, cleaning-head width, brush or beating mechanism, dust capacity, filter construction and replacement consumables. Compare pickup on the same mattress fabric using the same debris and test method. Record how freely the head moves over quilted covers, whether it catches loose fabric and how the dust container empties.

For models with an ultraviolet lamp or heated airflow, ask for evidence supporting the advertised function and safety assessment of the complete machine. Specify lamp shielding and a contact interlock, then agree how these will be checked. Ask for separate evidence for dust removal, mite removal and any claimed killing effect; a lamp specification alone does not establish performance.

For mains equipment within electrical safety scope, obtain technical documentation and a declaration of conformity, and confirm with OPSS which CE or UKCA marking and importer identification requirements apply. Instructions must be in easily understandable English. Check electromagnetic compatibility applicability and obtain evidence of hazardous-substance compliance. Plan WEEE producer responsibilities, including annual registration. Use testing and certification support to review the actual model.

Ask OPSS to confirm how the vacuum-cleaner ecodesign rules apply to mains-operated models, hybrids and battery-operated models, and whether a rated input power limit of below 900 W applies to the proposed model. Confirm the model's scope and applicable requirements before approving it. Where ecodesign applies, a declaration of conformity must be supported by technical documentation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-retailer stock order of corded mattress vacuum cleaners under 8508 11 00 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fabric pickup: compare production samples with the approved sample on mattress covers; check head movement, brush action, fabric snagging and pickup as the filter loads.

Dust containment: check container latches, filter seating and seals after emptying and refitting. Look for dust escaping around joints and confirm replacement filters fit.

Lamp and heat: where fitted, check shielding, the agreed contact-interlock behaviour, lamp operation and airflow. Refer accessible radiation and temperature assessment to the test laboratory.

Documents and accessories: match the model and ratings to the declaration and reports; check importer identification, English instructions, the agreed UK plug or charger, spare filters and carton contents.

What goes wrong

A suction figure measured at the motor does not show pickup through the finished head on soft fabric. A head can cling to a mattress cover, a beating mechanism can snag quilting, and a poorly seated filter can let collected dust escape. Test the assembled product with the agreed filter and head.

Another risk is approving a sample with a lamp interlock or filter seal that changes in production. Keep the approved construction and parts list with the order, inspect those features and review substitutions before acceptance. Treat unsupported mite-killing claims as a reason to request better evidence, rather than repeat them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on mattress vacuum cleaners from China?

It is 2% for self-contained-motor models up to 1,500 W with dust capacity up to 20 litres. The other heading lines and parts are 0%. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Do cordless mattress vacuum cleaners have the same duty?

Cordless operation alone does not change the duty. A self-contained-motor model within the power and dust-capacity thresholds falls under 8508 11 00 00 at 2%.

Does an ultraviolet lamp prove a mattress cleaner kills mites?

No. Ask for a report on the finished model with the test method and operating conditions. Keep dust pickup, mite removal and any killing claim separate when comparing results.

Do mattress vacuum cleaners need UKCA marking?

For mains equipment within electrical safety scope, confirm with OPSS which CE or UKCA marking, technical documentation and declaration of conformity requirements apply. Check the requirements for the actual model and destination.
