Getting started

Portable power stations for home power cuts

Choose a power station against named appliances, including their starting loads, and require measured runtime at its sockets. Agree charging arrangements and get an electrician's written acceptance before buying for any home-wiring connection. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to collect matching factory evidence.

Define what must work during a power cut

List essential appliances, their exact models, how long you need them and which will operate together. Separate appliances plugged directly into the station from equipment connected to fixed home wiring. Include the fridge, lighting and communications equipment you actually intend to use; do not accept a supplier's generic claim that it can power a home.

Record each appliance's running demand and ask its manufacturer about starting demand. Compressors and pumps can need a brief starting load above their running load. Specify the station's continuous output, surge output and permitted surge duration. Ask for a witnessed start with the intended appliance while the other agreed loads are already running.

Require usable runtime evidence

Battery capacity on a label is not evidence of energy delivered at the sockets. Request a discharge test identifying the station model, battery configuration, firmware, starting charge, ambient temperature, connected loads and shutdown point. Ask for measured energy delivered at the output and elapsed runtime, supported by meter records rather than a display photograph alone.

For an initial estimate, divide measured usable output energy by average appliance demand, using matching units. Then test the intended appliance mix: cycling loads, inverter consumption and automatic shutdown can change the result. Include light loads to check whether the station switches itself off. Use our test-report verification guide to check that evidence belongs to the supplied variant.

Agree how it will charge and remain ready

Identify the supplied mains charger, lead and plug, recharge time under stated conditions, charging temperature limits and any restriction on supplying appliances while charging. Choose a dry, ventilated location away from escape routes and combustible materials, following the manufacturer's instructions. Use our imported charger safety guide for the separate charger assessment.

If proposing solar charging, confirm panel compatibility, input voltage and current limits, connector polarity and the cables supplied. Ask for recharge evidence under stated conditions rather than an ideal-weather promise. For automatic backup, test loss and restoration of mains power with the intended appliances and record any interruption or manual restart. Our UPS sourcing guide helps when continuity is the purchasing priority.

Get electrician acceptance before a wiring purchase

Do not feed the station's output into a household wall socket or use a lead with exposed plug pins at both ends. Before buying for fixed wiring, send an electrician the exact model, manual, circuit information and proposed loads. Request written acceptance of the connection design, including mains isolation, changeover arrangements, earthing, neutral switching and protective-device operation. Have the electrician assess any uncertainty about earthing when appliances are plugged directly into the station too.

For finding an electrician to work on a home, GOV.UK points buyers to the Electrical Competent Person Register. Ask your chosen electrician which installation checks and paperwork apply to the property. Where the proposal involves a grid-connected installation in England, Scotland or Wales, ask the installer to confirm with the distribution network operator which permission or notification route applies. Our network approval guide covers that process.

Make the factory checks purchase conditions

Put the approved model, battery configuration, charger, socket arrangement, instructions and acceptance tests into the order. Agree pass conditions for appliance starting, usable runtime, charging and changeover behaviour before testing. Have a competent specialist assess electrical safety; a successful runtime demonstration does not establish socket, insulation or protection safety.

Request traceable test records and prohibit substitutions without your agreement. Before shipment, reconcile production labels and supplied accessories with the reviewed sample and documents. Cambridge China Bridge can use its staff in China to collect factory evidence and coordinate agreed checks. Retain the electrician's connection assessment separately, then arrange the agreed installation and handover checks at the property.

Frequently asked questions

Will a portable power station start my fridge?

Ask for a test with your fridge model while the other intended loads are running. Compare starting demand with the station's surge output and surge duration, rather than relying on the fridge's running rating.

How do I check a power station's real runtime?

Request measured output energy and elapsed runtime for a stated load, starting charge, temperature and shutdown point. Then test your intended appliance mix, including cycling and light loads.

Can I connect a power station to home wiring?

Only proceed after an electrician accepts the exact equipment and connection design. Never feed its output into a household wall socket. Agree isolation, earthing, protection and installation checks before purchase.

Can it charge while powering appliances?

Ask for written confirmation for the exact model and charger. Test the intended loads during charging and when mains power fails and returns; record interruptions, restrictions and any manual restart.
