Golden Week and Your Supply Chain: What Changes for Orders
Golden Week can interrupt factory production and change freight schedules. China's official 2026 National Day break was 1–7 October, with adjusted working days on 20 September and 10 October. Confirm your supplier's closure, production restart and freight booking before promising delivery.

How long is Golden Week, and which dates matter?
The State Council General Office's 2026 notice scheduled the National Day holiday for 1–7 October, a 7-day break, with adjusted working days on 20 September and 10 October. These are the official calendar arrangements, not confirmation of any particular factory's operating hours.
Check the arrangements for the relevant year using the China holiday calendar, then obtain the factory's own closure and restart schedule in writing. Check the warehouse and transport provider separately.
Keep the public holiday period, the supplier's production pause and the transport schedule separate in your plan. For other holiday planning, see Chinese public holidays that affect factories.
What changes for your order?
Factory closures can interrupt production and dispatch. Freight services can also change around the holiday, so confirm cargo readiness and the departure separately.
DHL's historical Golden Week guidance describes continuing port activity. Maersk's 2026 advisory lists cancelled sailings on selected Far East Asia–Europe services. Neither establishes the operating arrangements for every port or shipment: check your terminal, collection arrangements and booked service.
Use the table as a checklist for your particular order, whether you are buying a personal item, replenishing a small business or managing regular production.
| Stage | What to establish | What to request |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase order | Whether the supplier has accepted the specification and delivery requirement. | Written order acceptance and a production slot. |
| Materials and production | Whether components, packaging and labour are available for your order. | A dated production plan identifying unfinished work. |
| Inspection and release | Whether checks and any corrections can finish before dispatch. | An inspection appointment and agreed release conditions. |
| Collection and freight | Whether finished goods can reach the booked service. | Confirmed collection arrangements and the latest booking status. |
| Arrival | Whether the revised arrival still meets your actual need. | An updated delivery estimate and a receiving plan. |
When should I place my purchase order?
Work backwards from when you need usable goods at the destination. Allow separately for delivery, customs clearance, international transport, collection, inspection, production and material procurement. Ask the supplier and freight provider to confirm the assumptions they control.
Set an order deadline for your specific product and route. Check material availability for repeat orders and sample approval for new products. Ask for production scheduling confirmation separately from the deposit receipt.
Before authorising production, agree the specification, quantity, packaging, inspection requirements and what the quoted delivery date means. Record whether it refers to goods ready at the factory, dispatch or arrival.
Where a quote uses working days, confirm how the supplier counts holidays and adjusted weekends. See working-day lead times around China holidays when checking the calculation.
How should I schedule shipping around the break?
Review cargo readiness and freight options early. Maersk's September 2026 market update recommends early schedule and capacity planning, with flexibility around sailings. Its 2026 Golden Week advisory lists affected departures both before and after the official holiday.
Ask your freight provider for the latest schedule on your actual route and a fallback if it changes. Compare an earlier departure with a deliberately planned departure after reopening, using your stock needs and total cost.
For handover planning, see Golden Week factory closures and freight cut-offs. Confirm the deadlines that apply to your own shipment with the supplier and freight provider.
If goods are already late, establish their physical status before paying for an upgrade: unfinished, awaiting inspection, ready for collection or with the carrier. Check the remaining release and collection steps when assessing an alternative transport service.
What if my supplier has reopened but my order has not moved?
Request an order-specific update: what is complete, what remains, who is responsible and the next confirmed milestone. Ask for cargo readiness confirmation separately from a general reopening message.
Ask for evidence appropriate to the stage, such as an inspection report, collection confirmation or carrier tracking. Agree a revised delivery estimate from the remaining work rather than simply adding the holiday length.
For an individual purchase, focus on the seller's dispatch commitment and tracking. For business stock, compare the revised arrival with expected demand. For larger programmes, review dependencies across components and suppliers before changing the whole schedule.
If a partial shipment could help, agree in writing the quantities, additional charges and arrangements for the remaining goods before changing the order.
Keep destination costs in the plan: a short UK example
For goods shipped directly by sea into Great Britain, HMRC identifies the UK port of importation as the place of introduction for customs valuation. Relevant transport, insurance and associated delivery costs up to that point must be included in the customs value. Ask the declarant to check revised freight costs and avoid counting costs twice.
The import VAT value starts with the customs value, even when no Customs Duty is payable. Add applicable duties, levies and other import charges, excluding VAT itself, plus relevant incidental expenses to the first UK destination and those resulting from transport to a further UK destination known at importation. Ask the declarant to check the applicable treatment and avoid double counting.
This is a UK example. For an EU, US or other destination, obtain destination-specific customs advice before approving a revised landed-cost estimate.

Prepare a clear brief for sourcing support
For a discussion with Cambridge China Bridge, bring your product specification, quantity, supplier's current status, destination and required arrival date. Identify which dates are confirmed and which are estimates.
List any unclear production times, freight charges or delivery responsibilities before requesting support. Agree the scope and deliverables before commissioning work. See the Golden Week overview for related holiday planning.

The State Council General Office notice supports the 2026 holiday dates; its text was also checked on the Beijing municipal government's official republication. DHL's 2024 explainer supports only general operational context. Maersk's August and September 2026 publications support the service changes and planning advice described above. HMRC guidance supports the UK valuation example. The order checklist is practical purchasing advice, not a statement of legal duties.
Frequently asked questions
Is Golden Week always exactly a week?
Check the arrangements for the relevant year rather than assuming a fixed length. The official 2026 National Day break was 7 days. Confirm your supplier's operating dates separately.
Will every Chinese factory close on the official dates?
The public calendar does not confirm an individual factory's schedule. Ask about production, office availability and dispatch separately, including any suppliers needed to finish your order.
Are ports closed throughout Golden Week?
DHL's historical guidance describes continuing port activity. Check your specific terminal, collection arrangements and booked service rather than assuming either closure or normal service.
How early do I need to place my order?
Work backwards from the required arrival using confirmed production and transport information. Set a deadline for your particular product, quantity and route.
Does paying before the holiday guarantee shipment?
Do not treat payment as shipment confirmation. Obtain separate confirmation of production completion, inspection release, collection and the freight booking.
Can air freight rescue my delayed order?
Ask the freight provider to assess air freight against cargo readiness, release requirements and acceptance for carriage. Obtain a revised arrival estimate and total cost before switching.
Should I just add the holiday length to the delivery estimate?
Recalculate from the remaining work and available transport. Confirm the production slot and departure separately from the official holiday dates.
Does this matter for a small personal order?
Check whether the item is available, when the seller can dispatch it and which service will collect it. Use actual dispatch and tracking information when assessing progress.
