Can I use building props bought from China?
Use them only after a competent temporary-works designer has accepted the exact props and site arrangement. Obtain load evidence for the intended extension and fittings, and agree who installs, checks, inspects and authorises removal. Factory documents and checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Get the proposed arrangement accepted before buying
Ask a competent temporary-works designer to review the proposed props before ordering. HSE guidance says temporary-works designers need temporary-works training and experience. Send measured site information, the proposed opening or alteration, existing wall and floor details, and the builder's work sequence. Request written acceptance identifying the prop model, drawing revision and unresolved conditions.
Ask the designer to specify prop positions, spacing, extension, bracing, head fittings and base support, including how loads reach suitable support beneath the floor. Obtain the builder's agreement to use that arrangement. For adjoining-wall questions, follow our party wall checks guide.
Match load evidence to the actual configuration
Request the manufacturer's load tables, drawings, instructions and supporting reports for the exact model. Ask the designer to check capacity at the intended extension, with the proposed head fittings, base details and bracing. Ask whether the evidence assumes central loading, particular restraints or other conditions that differ from your site.
Have the designer distinguish a test failure load from a permitted working load and confirm the basis for accepting the proposed arrangement. A headline capacity or photograph of a similar prop leaves these questions unanswered. Our test report verification guide covers report identity and scope; here, ask whether the evidence supports this installation.
Fix the specification and check the delivered props
HSE guidance says manufacturers' instructions must be followed when selecting and using temporary support. Obtain readable English instructions and have the designer resolve any conflict with the proposed site arrangement before purchase. Record tube dimensions, material specification, weld details, adjustment mechanism, pins, plates and compatible accessories in the accepted order specification.
Ask the factory to identify the supplied model and batch and prohibit unapproved substitutions. Agree inspection criteria with the designer, including checks for bent tubes, damaged threads, missing pins and visible weld defects. Reconcile delivered props with the accepted specification before installation. Factory inspection supplies evidence about the goods; obtain separate site acceptance.
Name who installs, checks and releases the support
HSE guidance says propping must be installed, checked, inspected, maintained and dismantled in accordance with the designer's specification. Before work starts, record who coordinates the support, who installs it, who checks the completed arrangement and who authorises loading. Ask each person to confirm their competence for the assigned work.
Have the builder and designer agree a written sequence covering installation, checks before structural alteration, loading, ongoing use and removal. Include a clear hold point before removing existing support or opening the wall. Ask who confirms that permanent work is ready to carry the load before props are released. Keep site release separate from the purchase approval process.

Agree inspections and change controls
Ask the designer and site coordinator to set inspection timing and recheck triggers for this arrangement. Include disturbance, impact, settlement, altered loading and changes to nearby work. Keep records identifying the props, drawing revision, findings, corrective action and permission to resume. Ask for clear instructions on stopping affected work and keeping people away if support becomes uncertain.
Return changes in prop extension, position, accessories, supporting surfaces or work sequence to the designer before proceeding. Do not transfer acceptance to another room or project without review. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can obtain factory documents and coordinate checks against the accepted specification; appoint the site designer, installer and inspector separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Chinese building props for a wall opening?
Ask a competent temporary-works designer to accept the exact props and support arrangement before buying. Give them site details, configuration-specific load evidence and the builder's proposed sequence.
Does a prop load certificate prove it is suitable?
Ask the designer to match it to the supplied model, intended extension, fittings and support conditions, and distinguish test failure load from permitted working load. Keep missing evidence open until resolved.
Who should install and inspect renovation props?
Name competent people for installation, checking, inspection and maintenance before work starts. HSE guidance says these tasks, and dismantling, must follow the designer's specification.
When can I remove the building props?
Follow the agreed removal sequence and obtain release from the named site approver after the specified checks confirm the permanent work can carry the load. Do not decide from appearance alone.
