Getting started

Can I use a China-bought motorcycle helmet in the UK?

Yes, provided the helmet genuinely meets an accepted UK road-use standard. Buying it in China does not establish compliance: verify its approval and exact model, then check fit, condition and any available SHARP information. Supplier checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the road-use standard

Common accepted routes are UNECE Regulation 22.05, UNECE Regulation 22.06, or BS 6658:1985 with the BSI Kitemark. GOV.UK still lists both UNECE versions for road use. Do not treat CE, UKCA or a supplier's claim of 'international certification' alone as evidence that the helmet meets an accepted road-use standard.

Ask which approval route covers the actual helmet before ordering. This guide concerns checks before riding; a business buying stock for resale should separately establish its supply obligations. Use our motorcycle helmet sourcing guide for the wider purchasing brief.

Match the markings to the actual model

Request clear photographs of the approval label, complete approval reference, model designation, size, packaging and instructions on the helmet being supplied. Compare these with the approval documents. Ask the manufacturer or approval issuer to confirm the reference and covered configuration through independently found contact details.

Check whether the China-market version has the same shell, impact liner, retention system and supplied visor as the documented model. A shared brand name or similar appearance is insufficient. Keep unresolved differences on hold rather than accepting replacement stickers. Our test report verification guide explains the document checks.

Use available SHARP information carefully

SHARP does not aim to test every new helmet model, and its assessment is not a pass/fail score. A missing rating therefore does not by itself establish that a helmet is unsuitable for UK roads. Equally, a rating cannot authenticate the helmet in your parcel or replace checking its road-use approval.

Search SHARP directly for the exact manufacturer and model. Read any notes about versions or production changes, and ask the manufacturer to confirm whether the offered version matches the rated model. Most helmets tested by SHARP are purchased from UK retailers or distributors; avoid transferring a rating to an overseas variant without confirming the match.

Try the delivered helmet on

Measure your head and use the manufacturer's size guidance as a starting point. Arrange an unused fit trial and agree the supplier's return arrangements before buying. Try the actual delivered helmet with your usual glasses, if worn, rather than relying on a size label or a different helmet from the same brand.

Fasten and adjust the chinstrap. Check for firm, comfortable contact without painful pressure points, slipping or excessive movement when turning or tilting the helmet. Ask an experienced helmet retailer to help check whether it can roll off with the strap secured. Reject a poor fit rather than cutting the impact liner or improvising padding.

Check condition before the first ride

Inspect the shell, visible impact liner, strap stitching, buckle, visor and fastenings. Check for cracks, crushed areas, loose parts, moisture damage and signs of previous use. Read the manufacturer's instructions for fastening, visor operation, care and approved accessories. Hold a helmet with suspected impact damage or unexplained alterations out of use while seeking the manufacturer's advice.

Keep photographs, purchase records, approval confirmation and the model details together. Ask about storage and handling history, particularly for clearance stock or returns; our China stock-lot guide covers provenance checks. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate identification and inspection, while the wearer needs to assess the delivered helmet's fit. Frequently asked questions

Is a motorcycle helmet bought in China legal in the UK?

It can be, provided it genuinely meets an accepted UK road-use standard. Confirm the approval reference and exact model; the purchase location or a seller's assurance does not establish compliance.

Can I still wear a UNECE 22.05 helmet?

GOV.UK still lists UNECE Regulation 22.05 alongside 22.06 for helmets worn on UK roads. Verify the helmet's genuine approval, condition and fit before use.

Does my helmet need a SHARP rating?

SHARP does not aim to rate every new model. Missing SHARP information is not itself a road-use verdict. Check accepted approval separately, and use available ratings only for the matching model.

How do I check whether an imported helmet is genuine?

Send photographs and the complete approval reference to the manufacturer or approval issuer through independently found contact details. Ask them to confirm the model and configuration. Hold unresolved mismatches out of use.
