Getting started

Can I use a China-bought walkie-talkie in the UK?

Yes, provided its use falls within an applicable licence exemption or Ofcom licence. Check the exact transmit frequencies, power and antenna configuration before ordering; a seller's claim of UK compatibility is insufficient. Cambridge China Bridge can help gather the factory evidence.

A walkie-talkie used for emergency radio communication.

Establish the intended use before choosing a radio

Ofcom authorises access to spectrum through licensing or licence exemption. Exemption depends on the device meeting specified technical parameters. Start by describing your intended use: staff communications, hobby conversations, remote control or another transmitting function. Do not treat the description 'hobby radio' as an exemption.

Send Ofcom the intended use, location and exact equipment specification if the route is unclear. Ask whether to investigate a business radio licence, an amateur radio licence or a licence exemption. Resolve that question before selecting a factory model, and keep the response with your purchase records. For boating communications, see our marine VHF use guide.

Get the actual transmit frequencies

Ask for a channel-by-channel transmit frequency list, operating mode, channel spacing and occupied bandwidth. Request the shipped programming file and manual. A broad tuning range or a channel name is not enough to compare the radio with the applicable exemption or licence.

Ask whether users can change transmit frequencies through the keypad, software or a reset. Have the supplier distinguish receive-only settings from transmit settings. Record the firmware and regional version, then compare a sample's configuration with the written specification. Our radio compliance guide covers the separate product checks.

Check power and the complete antenna configuration

Request power evidence for each operating mode and selectable power setting. Ask whether the stated value is transmitter output or radiated power, and which antenna and test configuration produced it. Compare like-for-like measurements with the limits in the applicable Ofcom documentation.

Request photographs showing whether the antenna is integral, removable or connected externally. Record antenna gain, connectors, cables and any proposed amplifier, base station or repeater. Ask Ofcom to confirm whether that complete arrangement fits the intended route. Do not assume matching frequencies and a low-power menu setting settle the exemption question.

Keep product evidence and transmission permission separate

For equipment placed on the Great Britain market, the importer must ensure it conforms with the essential requirements. Treat product conformity and spectrum authorisation as separate purchasing checks. A CE or UKCA logo alone does not answer which transmitting configuration you intend to use. For recalled equipment, see our UK product recall guide.

Request the declaration of conformity, manual and test reports matching the exact model and configuration. Check that the report identifies the antenna, firmware and operating modes being supplied. Use our test report verification guide for document checks. If the destination is Northern Ireland, ask your compliance adviser to review that destination specifically.

Make approval a condition of the order

Put the approved frequencies, modes, power settings, antenna and firmware into the purchase specification. State who will arrange any necessary licence, programme the radios and check the shipped settings. Require written approval before substitutions or configuration changes. Keep unresolved equipment off the air while obtaining confirmation.

Approve a sample and arrange competent technical checks where the supplier's evidence leaves gaps. Ask our staff in China to collect configuration records and match production units to the approved sample. Use our pre-payment checklist for the wider purchasing checks before releasing the balance.

Frequently asked questions

Does a CE mark mean my walkie-talkie is licence-free?

A CE mark alone does not establish licence exemption. Check the exact device and configuration against the applicable technical parameters, or confirm the licence route with Ofcom.

Can I reprogramme a China-bought radio for UK use?

Do not assume reprogramming settles the question. Check transmit frequencies, modes, power, antenna and product evidence together, then confirm the applicable exemption or licence route.

Which Ofcom licence do I need for a hobby transmitter?

Send Ofcom the intended activity and full transmitter specification. Ask which licence or exemption applies before ordering; 'hobby' is not enough information to choose the route.

What should I ask the factory before buying radios?

Request transmit frequencies, modes, power test results, antenna details, firmware, programming files, manual, declaration of conformity and matching test reports. Make approval conditional on resolving gaps.
