Getting started

China-bought paddleboards: checks before UK use

Match the board to its instructions, inspect its construction and inflate it only as directed. Choose the leash for the actual water conditions, wear suitable buoyancy equipment and arrange a check with a qualified instructor before launching. Ask for factory documents and inspection support from Cambridge China Bridge.

Match construction evidence to the actual board

Ask for the exact model, intended users, permitted load and suitable water environments. For an inflatable board, request details of the internal thread structure, outer material, rail seams, valve and leash attachment reinforcement. Ask which seams are bonded or welded and obtain test records matching that construction. Put these details in your product specification.

Inspect the delivered board for cuts, lifted seams, bulges, loose fittings and damaged attachment points. Check that the fin locks securely, the deck pad stays attached and the paddle adjustment holds. Isolate a board with unexplained deformation or leakage. Factory photographs and a successful inflation do not establish durability or suitability for your intended water.

Follow model-specific inflation instructions

Obtain usable English instructions matching the board, pump and valve. Confirm the recommended working pressure, maximum pressure, gauge units, valve position and inflation sequence. Never borrow a pressure setting from another board or an online demonstration. If the board label and manual disagree, stop and obtain a written correction from the manufacturer.

Use the specified pump and check its gauge before inflation. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for checking leaks, temperature changes, direct sunlight, deflation, drying and storage. Do not tighten a valve or repair a seam while pressurised. Test whether a new user can follow the supplied manual using our assembly and use instructions guide.

Choose the leash for the water conditions

Do not treat a bundled ankle leash as suitable everywhere. For ordinary flowing or tidal water, ask your instructor to specify and fit a quick release waist system so the release is accessible if the board snags. Check the complete assembly, including the board attachment, belt, leash and release. Practise finding and operating the release under controlled instructor supervision.

On sheltered still water without snagging hazards, discuss an ankle or calf attachment and a coiled leash with your instructor; for surf, discuss a straight leash and surf-specific training. Assess current and obstructions rather than relying on a location's name. Keep beginners away from whitewater, weirs and strong tidal flows. A quick release belt does not make those environments safe.

Fit buoyancy equipment to the wearer

Wear a suitable, correctly fitted buoyancy aid rather than leaving it strapped to the board. Ask your instructor whether a buoyancy aid or lifejacket suits the user's swimming ability, clothing and planned conditions. Check the manufacturer's size and intended-use information, fastenings and condition. Do not assume an included vest is suitable because it came with the board.

Have the instructor check whether the equipment rides up, restricts paddling or prevents remounting, and whether it obstructs the leash release. Discuss the differences between foam equipment and inflatable devices, including activation and servicing. Use our lifejacket and buoyancy aid buying guide for product evidence checks.

Arrange an instructor check before launching

Book a qualified paddleboard instructor whose qualification and experience cover the planned environment. Send the board model, instructions and equipment details beforehand. Ask them to check inflation, loading, paddle adjustment, leash compatibility and buoyancy fit, then supervise falling in, remounting and release practice in a controlled setting. Record unresolved problems and keep affected equipment out of use.

Before each outing, review weather, wind direction, tides, water levels, hazards and exit points. Avoid offshore winds, carry a means of calling for help on your person and tell someone your route and expected return. Ask the waterway or venue operator about access conditions. For shared business or club use, follow our club equipment guide. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory documents and construction checks. Frequently asked questions

What pressure should I inflate a China-bought paddleboard to?

Use the working pressure in the instructions for the exact model and check the gauge units. If the label and manual disagree, stop and ask the manufacturer to resolve the discrepancy.

Can I use the ankle leash supplied with my paddleboard?

Have an instructor check it against the actual conditions. For ordinary flowing or tidal water, discuss a quick release waist system. Do not assume the bundled leash suits every location.

Do I need a buoyancy aid on a paddleboard?

Wear suitable buoyancy equipment. Ask an instructor to check the type, fit and compatibility with your leash, clothing and remounting technique.

Should an instructor check my imported paddleboard?

Arrange a check before use, especially for unfamiliar equipment. Choose an instructor qualified for the planned environment and bring the board, instructions, pump, paddle, leash and buoyancy equipment.
