How to check a lifejacket from China
Match the equipment to the activity and rescue arrangements, fit it on each wearer in their boating clothing, and check evidence for the exact model supplied. Confirm UK inspection, servicing and spare parts before use; hold any doubtful unit. For factory-side checks, speak to Cambridge China Bridge.

Match the equipment to the activity
Start with the club's activity leader or boat operator. Describe the water, weather, swimming ability, clothing, likely immersion and available rescue support. Ask them to confirm the appropriate equipment type and performance level against the manufacturer's stated uses and limitations. A buoyancy aid may not turn an unconscious wearer face upwards, so do not treat it as interchangeable with a lifejacket.
For paddling or activities involving deliberate immersion, ask specifically about inflation type, movement and escape from the craft. For boating with heavier clothing or delayed rescue, ask about those conditions explicitly. Agree how someone would raise the alarm and be recovered. Keep the equipment out of use while suitability remains unresolved.
Check fit on each wearer
Match the wearer's weight and body measurements to the model's labelled range and instructions. Try it over the clothing they will actually wear. Fasten and adjust the supplied straps, including crotch straps where fitted, as instructed. Ask a trained activity leader to check that it stays in position without obstructing breathing, movement or access to the inflation handle.
For children, arrange an individual fitting rather than choosing an adult model with tightened straps. For shared club equipment, repeat the fit check whenever the wearer changes. If it rides up or cannot be adjusted properly, choose another size or model. Any familiarisation in water should follow the manufacturer's instructions under competent supervision with rescue support.
Match the evidence to the supplied model
Request the declaration of conformity, applicable conformity-assessment certificates, underlying test reports and English instructions. Match the manufacturer, model, size range, stated standard and edition, performance level and inflation arrangement to the actual label and goods. Our PPE sourcing guide covers the general compliance route; our certification guide explains the documents.
Ask the issuing body to confirm authenticity and scope using independently obtained contact details. Resolve differences in foam, bladder, buckles, webbing or inflation components before accepting the batch. A certificate for a similar-looking model leaves a gap. Record label photographs and batch identifiers, and use our inspection guide to brief checks on production goods.
Inspect condition before issuing equipment
Use the exact model's instructions for pre-use checks. Examine covers, seams, straps, fastenings and foam where applicable for damage or deterioration. For inflatable models, check the specified cylinder, firing mechanism, indicators and component expiry information as instructed. Confirm that the inflation handle is accessible and the jacket is packed correctly. Refer unfamiliar mechanisms or unclear indicators to a competent service provider.
Keep pre-use checks separate from deeper inspection and testing. HSE guidance calls for a more thorough programme following the manufacturer's instructions. Ask the service provider to set the schedule for the model and club usage. Keep an equipment record covering identity, checks, servicing and defects; separate doubtful units and return them to use only after the issue is resolved.

Confirm UK servicing before buying
Send the proposed UK service provider the manufacturer, exact model, label photographs, instructions and inflation-system details before ordering. Obtain written confirmation that it can inspect and service that model, obtain the specified parts and provide a service record. Ask how faults, unavailable parts and discontinued models are handled. Confirm arrangements for foam equipment too, including assessment of deterioration and replacement.
The government service-station finder lists approved stations for inflatable appliances meeting the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea standard. Its scope does not establish servicing access for every recreational jacket. For your proposed model, seek confirmation from the manufacturer and provider. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can match factory goods and documents to your agreed inspection brief; confirm UK servicing separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a buoyancy aid instead of a lifejacket?
Ask the activity leader to assess the activity, wearer and rescue support against the model's instructions. A buoyancy aid may not turn an unconscious person face upwards.
Is a CE mark enough to accept a lifejacket?
Check the declaration, applicable certificates and test reports against the exact model, size and inflation arrangement supplied. Confirm document authenticity, fit, condition and UK servicing access.
Can any UK service centre service a Chinese lifejacket?
Obtain written acceptance for the exact manufacturer and model before buying. Confirm access to instructions, specified replacement parts and a service record.
How often should a club inspect its lifejackets?
Follow the model's pre-use instructions and agree deeper inspection and servicing with a competent provider, taking club usage into account. Record checks and defects, and separate doubtful equipment.
