How to approve electronic product thermal performance
Approve the exact production configuration against a written thermal test plan covering ambient conditions, sustained loads and ventilation restrictions. Require temperature records, agreed limits and competent review of shutdown and failure behaviour before release. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory evidence through its staff in China.

Define the approval before testing
Start with the intended installation, users and operating pattern. Ask a competent product safety engineer or laboratory to select the applicable assessment methods and temperature limits, explaining their basis. Agree separate acceptance criteria for useful performance and safety. A product that throttles or shuts down safely may still fail your continuous-use specification.
Identify the sample, enclosure, power supply, battery, cooling parts and firmware version in the test plan. Use a production-representative assembly with its covers fitted. The electronics sourcing guide covers the wider buying specification; this approval should establish how that configuration behaves as heat builds up.
Control ambient conditions and operating loads
Specify the claimed operating environment and test at its relevant boundaries. Record the actual air temperature around the product, installation orientation, mounting surface, clearances and surrounding enclosure. Include nearby heat sources where relevant. A demonstration on an open factory bench does not establish performance inside a customer's cabinet.
Define realistic combinations of sustained demand, such as charging while operating, connected accessories and demanding software modes. Ask the reviewer to identify which combinations create the greatest thermal stress. Agree how long testing continues and how temperature stabilisation is judged. Log actual power, workload and output so reduced performance cannot conceal overheating.
Measure heat where it matters
Have the reviewer specify measurement points on accessible surfaces and critical internal parts, including batteries, power components, connectors and insulation where relevant. Record the instruments, sensor positions, attachment method and measurement uncertainty. Thermal images can help locate hot spots, but should support suitable measurements rather than provide the entire approval record.
Request temperature histories alongside ambient readings, operating states and any fan-speed changes, throttling or protective trips. Compare results with the agreed limits and explain borderline findings. Check the tested adaptor and cable against the supplied combination using the power adaptor and cable approval guide.
Review restricted ventilation and failure behaviour
Ask the competent reviewer to define foreseeable ventilation restrictions and relevant abnormal conditions, such as obstructed vents, a stalled fan or failed temperature sensing. Agree which conditions should be assessed separately or together, with reasons. Use a laboratory equipped to contain the hazards. Do not ask purchasing staff to improvise blocked-vent or fault tests.
Record whether protection operates, what remains energised, and whether heat continues to rise after shutdown. Have the reviewer assess smoke, ignition, battery venting, enclosure damage, exposed live parts and unsafe automatic restart where relevant. Cooling down or switching off does not by itself establish acceptable failure behaviour. Require a written conclusion explaining residual risks and unresolved findings.

Release only the configuration supported by evidence
Keep the agreed plan, sample identity, setup photographs, raw records, report and signed review together. Resolve failures through documented changes and appropriate retesting before approving production. Use the test report verification guide to check authenticity and scope. Record which changes to cooling, components, enclosure or firmware trigger renewed thermal review.
Carry the reviewed installation clearances, ambient restrictions and operating limitations into the user instructions. For equipment covered by the electrical equipment safety regulations in Great Britain, manufacturers must provide clear, legible instructions in easily understandable English. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can obtain factory records and check production against the approved configuration; agree specialist thermal assessment separately.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an electronic product heat test run?
Agree the duration with the competent reviewer using the intended duty cycle and a defined temperature stabilisation criterion. Keep recording protective trips and reduced output; elapsed time alone is not an approval.
What ambient temperature should we test at?
Use the claimed operating environment and relevant installation conditions. Have the reviewer select the test boundaries and record actual ambient temperature throughout. Avoid relying on an unspecified room-temperature demonstration.
Should we test with ventilation blocked?
Ask a competent reviewer to define foreseeable restrictions and an appropriate laboratory method. Record the obstruction and protective response. Purchasing staff should not improvise potentially hazardous fault tests.
Does thermal shutdown mean the product passes?
Shutdown may protect the product while failing your sustained-performance brief. Require competent review of remaining heat, damage and restart behaviour, then assess safety and useful performance against their separate criteria.
