Where to source in China by product

Start with the product's materials and manufacturing processes, then shortlist regions with a relevant supplier ecosystem. Shenzhen suits an electronics search; Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Fujian offer different textile, hardware and footwear starting points. Verify the production site and subcontractors with Cambridge China Bridge.

Choose the ecosystem your product needs

A manufacturing cluster is a place to start searching, not proof that a particular supplier can make your product. Work backwards from the critical process: electronic assembly, fabric dyeing, shoe construction or metal forming. A supplier near relevant component makers and processors may be useful, but ask which of those businesses actually support your order.

Prepare a brief stating materials, construction, finish, intended use, packing and repeat-order needs before choosing a region. Use the product specification guide for the detailed brief. Separate essential capabilities from preferences so that a familiar city name does not exclude a suitable factory elsewhere.

Regional starting points by product

The regional industry sources listed below support these search starting points. The checks are practical screening questions, not claims that every local factory offers the same capability. This is a selective shortlist; furniture needs a separate search. For a product-specific regional search, see buying plumbing and sanitaryware in Nan'an.

Match the regional ecosystem to the process you need
Product searchRegion to investigateCapability to verify
Electronic devices and connected productsShenzhen, Guangdong: electronic information, communications and intelligent terminal industriesWhere boards are assembled, who controls firmware, and how the finished device is tested
Fabrics and products needing dyeing or finishingKeqiao, Shaoxing, Zhejiang: fabric production and a textile chain covering weaving, dyeing and garment manufactureThe actual weaving and dyeing sites, repeat shade control, and whether finished-product sewing is available
Finished home textiles, including beddingTongzhou, Nantong, Jiangsu: a home textile ecosystemWho supplies the fabric, where cutting and sewing happen, and how shrinkage and finished dimensions are checked
Footwear and related clothingJinjiang, Fujian, particularly Chendai: footwear and clothing manufacturingShoe construction, access to lasts and sole tooling, bonding checks, and control of material substitutions
Hardware, power tools and kitchenwareYongkang, Zhejiang: a hardware cluster including these product categoriesThe relevant forming, machining or assembly process, finishing subcontractors, and product-specific testing

Find the production site behind the sales address

Ask for separate addresses for the sales office, sample room, production line and critical subcontractors. A showroom or market stall can introduce a useful supplier, but it does not identify the manufacturing site. For fabric buying, distinguish a stock merchant from a mill; for electronics, distinguish a component seller from the business assembling and testing your device.

Record who performs each critical operation, who supplies its inputs and who approves changes. A regional ecosystem only helps your order if the supplier can explain how it uses it. Follow the factory capability guide for equipment evidence and process questions once the actual site is identified.

Compare candidates before planning visits

Send the same brief to candidates in relevant clusters and to any credible supplier elsewhere. Keep a comparison sheet covering process fit, material access, subcontracting, sample evidence, packing, collection location and delivered cost. Ask suppliers to flag deviations explicitly. Do not label a region cheaper without comparable quotations for the same specification.

Visit candidates that can explain the production route and show relevant evidence. Plan the visit around the operations that could make your product fail, including an important subcontractor where practical. The factory audit checklist covers the wider site review; the regional shortlist tells you where to begin that search.

Approve the supplier, then review shared dependencies

Keep a candidate provisional until its sample and trial production demonstrate the required result. Record the approved production site, materials, process route and proposed change controls. Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to investigate candidate factories and inspect goods against the agreed brief.

If the search is for a backup supplier, compare upstream sources as well as factory addresses. Suppliers in different cities may still depend on the same fabric mill, component maker or finishing business. Use the second supplier qualification guide to turn a regional alternative into a tested source.

Frequently asked questions

Which region in China should I source from?

Start with the critical process. Investigate Shenzhen for electronics, Keqiao for fabrics, Nantong for home textiles, Jinjiang for footwear and Yongkang for hardware. Verify each factory against your specification.

Should I buy fabric in Keqiao or bedding in Nantong?

Keqiao is a starting point for fabric and processing searches; Nantong is a starting point for finished home textiles. Check the actual production route because a seller may source fabric or sewing elsewhere.

Does a supplier's city prove it is a factory?

No. Ask where your product will be made, which processes happen there and which are subcontracted. A sales address, showroom or regional reputation does not establish production capability.

Is it cheaper to source everything from the same region?

Compare quotations, packing, inland collection and consolidation against the same brief. Keeping suppliers close may simplify coordination, but it does not establish the lowest delivered cost.
