Costs & payment

Will wedding insurance cover orders from China?

Do not assume your wedding policy covers China orders. Before paying, obtain written insurer confirmation of the named supplier, specific goods and covered events, including any overseas exclusions. Ask separately about late delivery and insolvency. Prepare the supplier details with Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm whose purchase you are insuring

Start with the policyholder, purchaser and contracting seller. Identify whether you are buying directly from a Chinese factory, from a UK seller supplying China-made goods, or through an agent. Send the insurer the proposed contract, invoice and payment route. Ask it to confirm the eligible supplier by its full business name and address.

If you are buying for clients or your event business, describe that purpose explicitly. Ask whether the proposed policy accepts that purchase rather than assuming personal wedding cover suits a business order. Where a planner or relative places the order or pays, ask the insurer to confirm that arrangement too.

Get written approval for the actual goods

Ask: “Please confirm whether this named supplier and the attached purchases are eligible under my policy. The goods are made in China and will be delivered before the wedding. Please identify the applicable cover, exclusions, limits, excess and any conditions.” Attach descriptions of the dresses, decorations and personalised goods, their agreed prices and delivery dates.

Ask which policy category covers each item, including bridesmaid dresses, hired decorations and personalised gifts. Check deposits, outstanding balances, alterations and replacement purchases separately. Request a response tied to your policy reference and the relevant wording. If it conflicts with an exclusion, ask for a formal policy amendment before relying on it.

Check overseas exclusions against the seller

Ask specifically about exclusions for overseas suppliers, direct imports, marketplace purchases and payments through intermediaries. Do not treat confirmation of a UK wedding location as an answer about a supplier in China. Equally, explain when your contracting seller is a UK business using a Chinese factory, rather than describing only where production happens.

Request confirmation of cover while goods are in production, travelling, stored and awaiting use. Ask about damage, loss, incorrect personalisation and poor fit as separate scenarios. Keep the delivery and correction plan alongside the insurance response; use our wedding decoration ordering guide for that timetable.

Separate late delivery from insolvency

A missed dispatch date does not establish insolvency. Ask the insurer to distinguish a trading supplier running late, a parcel delayed in transit, a supplier stopping trading and formal insolvency. For each scenario, request the applicable policy section and evidence needed. Do not assume a supplier-failure heading answers every delivery problem.

Before ordering, ask whether a standalone goods supplier qualifies if it will not attend the wedding. Also ask whether unusable personalised goods and emergency replacements are eligible without cancelling the wedding. Agree the arrival deadline separately using our essential wedding delivery date guide. Insurance confirmation should sit alongside that agreement.

Coordinate insurance and card enquiries

A chargeback is a request to your credit or debit card issuer to reverse a transaction. If goods do not arrive, contact the insurer and card issuer promptly and ask each about eligibility, evidence and deadlines. Ask the insurer whether it expects you to pursue the seller or card issuer first. Use our delayed-order chargeback guide for the card enquiry.

Keep a shared record of the order, promised arrival, supplier messages, payments, claim references and any refunds or credits. Tell each handler about the other claim and ask how any recovery affects the outstanding loss. Before accepting a settlement or buying replacements, check the insurer’s instructions. See supplier refunds during a chargeback if money arrives.

Frequently asked questions

Does UK wedding insurance cover Chinese suppliers?

Ask the insurer to confirm your named seller and purchase in writing. Include the seller’s country, the goods, payment route and wedding location, and ask specifically about overseas-supplier exclusions.

Will wedding insurance pay if my dress arrives late?

Ask about late delivery by a supplier that is still trading, separately from insolvency. Request confirmation about replacement clothing and whether a claim needs the wedding itself to be cancelled.

Are personalised wedding decorations insured?

Send the insurer the exact items and personalisation details. Ask which category applies and whether non-delivery, incorrect wording, damage and replacement costs are covered.

Should I contact my insurer or card provider first?

Contact both promptly to establish their requirements and deadlines. Disclose parallel enquiries and any refund or credit, and ask the insurer whether it expects another recovery route to be tried first.
