How to check gas appliance certification
Match the appliance you are buying to its type-examination scope, obtain the linked production-assessment evidence, and verify the issuing bodies and marking numbers. A type certificate alone does not establish the complete assessment chain. Factory-side document and configuration checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the appliance before requesting certificates
Ask the factory for the intended use, model, gas type, supply pressure and appliance category. Send this specification to the proposed conformity assessment body and ask it to confirm the applicable route in writing. OPSS says the assessment includes testing for the gas to be used and the UK gas supply pressure. Our markings guide explains the distinction between a conformity mark, a test report and management-system certification.
Match the certificate to the product you will sell
OPSS says the type-examination certificate must identify the applicant and include the model numbers and trademarks intended for the finished product. Request the complete certificate, schedules and amendments, then ask the issuer to confirm the scope against your specification. Compare the certified configuration with drawings, component lists and proposed data plates. Record any model alias or private-label name explicitly rather than assuming that a similar-looking appliance is covered.
Check the production assessment as well
For the type-examination route, request both the type certificate and the linked production-assessment certificate or approval. OPSS says the manufacturer placing the product on the market must possess both certificates, although the type certificate need not be in its name. Ask the body which production evidence applies to this order and whether it covers the factory actually making it. Follow our component substitution guide when the factory proposes a change.
Verify the bodies and their identification numbers
Find the UK approved body in the official register and check its gas-appliance scope against the assessment it claims to perform. For a CE route accepted in GB, OPSS says the required third-party assessment must be carried out by a notified body rather than a UK approved body. Verify each issuer independently. Ask the production-assessment body to confirm the identification number for the proposed marking, and reconcile it with the approval documents and data-plate artwork.
Make unresolved gaps a purchasing hold point
Before approving shipment, assemble the certificate chain, issuer confirmations, production evidence, specification and final label photographs. Put unresolved scope, factory or body-number discrepancies on a written hold list. Ask for documentary resolution rather than another generic test report. Our product compliance file guide helps organise the records. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate factory-side checks and document requests.
Frequently asked questions
Is a gas appliance type certificate enough?
For the type-examination route, obtain the linked production-assessment evidence too. OPSS says the manufacturer placing the product on the market must possess both certificates.
Can I use a certificate in the factory’s name?
OPSS says the type certificate need not be in the market-facing manufacturer’s name. Confirm the model and trademark scope, obtain the linked production certificate and establish the complete product history.
How do I check the conformity body number?
Verify the issuer independently, check its assessment scope and ask the production-assessment body to confirm the number on your proposed marking. Reconcile the answer with the approval documents and label artwork.
Does a similar model’s certificate cover my order?
Ask the issuer to confirm your exact model, configuration, gas type, pressure and trademark in writing. Keep the order on hold while any mismatch remains unresolved.
