Sourcing wooden insect hotels from China

Wooden insect hotels from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant wood, bamboo and fibreboard lines, with no trade remedy recorded for those lines. Products sold to consumers must have their safety compliance demonstrated; check timber species for CITES controls. Cambridge China Bridge sources wooden insect hotels.

An insect hotel made from a wooden box.

Duty and material classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 4421 covers other articles of wood. The relevant bamboo, fibreboard and residual wooden-article lines carry 0% duty from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. The repeated residual code in the table represents different insect-hotel designs, rather than separate tariff lines.

The residual wooden-article line attaches CITES import control. CITES-listed specimens need an import permit; confirm the timber species and the applicable documentation with your customs broker before ordering. The supplied tariff also attaches a torture-and-repression import prohibition to the bamboo and residual lines, plus cultural-object export licensing and torture-and-repression export restrictions. Ask your broker to confirm their relevance to the actual goods and any later export.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete hotel, its frame material and its nesting inserts. Bamboo tubes inside a wooden frame do not establish that the complete article belongs in the bamboo line. For the wider heading, see wooden beehives. See our guide to sourcing wooden curtain poles.

Specify the nesting chambers and weather protection

Specify the frame species, roof material, joint design, mounting arrangement and every nesting insert. State hole diameter and depth, whether drilled holes have closed backs, tube length, entrance finish and how inserts are retained. Approve a physical sample showing the actual materials, rather than relying on a photograph of the front.

Agree the coating and adhesive, an outdoor exposure check and acceptance criteria for swelling, cracking and loose inserts. Ask for the timber species and source documents so the broker can assess the CITES position. Products should only be sold once compliance with product safety regulations has been demonstrated appropriately.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 wooden insect hotels, illustrative order only under 4421 99 99 99, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Nesting chambers: check drilled holes and tubes against the drawing, including depth, closed backs, splinters, blocked entrances and loose filling.

Roof and frame: inspect roof overhang, joints, cracks and exposed edges; wet sample units and check for retained water, swelling and joint opening.

Mounting: test the supplied bracket or hanger with the complete hotel attached; check screw retention, sharp points and the agreed mounting instructions.

Packing and condition: check for mould, damp inserts, crushed roofs and displaced filling on arrival. Compare production units with the approved sample at inspection.

What goes wrong

A hotel can match the catalogue photograph while its tubes are shallow, drilled entrances are rough or the filling falls out when handled. A thin roof or poorly joined frame can admit water, while damp packing can leave mould on the nesting inserts. Set acceptance criteria for these defects before production.

Material substitutions also matter: fibreboard can replace solid timber, or bamboo inserts can be confused with a bamboo article on the declaration. Keep the complete material list alongside the sample and ask the broker to resolve classification before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on wooden insect hotels from China?

The relevant wood, bamboo and fibreboard lines in the supplied tariff facts carry 0% duty, with no recorded trade remedy or suspension. Confirm the complete product's classification.

Do wooden insect hotels need CITES documents?

The residual wooden-article code attaches CITES control. CITES-listed specimens need an import permit. Give your broker the timber species and ask them to confirm the documents for your product.

What should I specify for the nesting holes?

Agree hole diameter, depth, closed backs, entrance finish and insert retention against a physical sample. Specify bamboo tubes separately from drilled wooden blocks.

How do I check whether an insect hotel withstands rain?

Agree an outdoor exposure check before ordering. Inspect roof coverage and joints, then check sample units for water retention, swelling, cracks and loose inserts after wetting.
