UK duty and timber controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 4421 covers other articles of wood. For new, empty solid-wood beehives, confirm whether 4421 99 99 99 fits the complete product. The table shows buying formats against the same provisional line, rather than separate tariff classifications. For the wider family, see wooden boxes and carved ornaments. See our guide to sourcing wooden curtain poles.

The supplied record shows 0% ordinary duty, no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. It attaches CITES import control and an import prohibition concerning torture and repression goods; ask your customs broker to confirm the latter's applicability. It also records cultural-object export licensing and torture-related export restrictions. These are export entries, so have the broker distinguish them from import requirements.

Check the timber species and the scope of its CITES listing. Official guidance requires a permit for species listed in Annex A, B or C; confirm the applicable document with the authority before shipment. Confirm the finished hive, material and separately supplied parts using finding your commodity code. This guide concerns new empty equipment, so obtain separate advice for used hives, bees or comb.

Specify the hive system and timber

Agree the hive system by drawings and a physical sample. Specify internal box dimensions, frame length, frame-rest profile, bee space, brood and honey-box compatibility, entrance arrangement and ventilation. A familiar model name alone does not establish compatibility with the buyer's existing equipment.

Specify timber species, moisture acceptance, board thickness, joint construction, fasteners and whether the order includes frames, floor, roof and crown board. Record coatings and preservatives, including where they are applied. Ask for assembly instructions and packing that protects machined edges. For hives sold to consumers, the importer remains responsible for product safety after sale.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of new, empty wooden beehives under 4421 99 99 99, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: assemble production components and fit the buyer's reference frames; check frame clearance, rests and interchangeability between boxes.

Timber: check species against the order, measure moisture against the agreed acceptance criteria and reject splits, loose knots, mould and twisted boards.

Weather protection: check roof overlaps, joints, drainage and coating coverage against the approved sample; inspect for exposed fasteners and sharp edges.

Arrival: count components, check transport damage and assemble a sample from delivered cartons. Use quality inspection to agree the checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong

Boxes can look correct while frame rests or internal clearances prevent existing frames from fitting. Wet timber can move after assembly, leaving gaps or making stacked boxes rock. Roof leaks, splitting around screws and missing assembly parts can turn a saleable kit into rework.

Approve an assembled sample with the intended frames, then inspect production against that sample and the drawings. Record moisture and joint fit before shipment and repeat the checks on arrival. Check the timber species before committing to an order rather than relying on a generic description such as cedar.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on wooden beehives from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% ordinary duty for 4421 99 99 99, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Confirm that this code fits your hive.

Do wooden beehives need CITES paperwork?

Check the timber species and listing scope. The tariff attaches CITES control to the proposed line; official guidance requires a permit for Annex A, B or C species. Confirm the applicable document before shipment.

Will Chinese wooden beehives fit my existing frames?

Do not rely on the model name. Send reference frames and drawings, then check frame rests, internal clearances and box interchangeability on an assembled production sample.

Should I buy assembled or flat-packed beehives?

Compare packed volume, assembly work and damage risk. For flat-packed kits, check joint fit, component counts, fasteners and instructions; for assembled hives, check squareness and stacked fit.
