UK duty on women's knitted bomber jackets

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 6102 covers women's or girls' knitted or crocheted outerwear, including wind-jackets and similar articles, other than those of heading 6104. The bomber-jacket candidate lines shown here all carry 12% duty for goods from China. The supplied records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions.

The tariff attaches cat and dog fur and seal-product import controls; wool, fine animal hair and other textile material lines also attach CITES controls. Cat and dog fur products cannot be imported or exported. Seal products brought into Great Britain to trade must have a seal catch certificate; confirm eligibility under the Inuit and other indigenous communities exemption with your customs broker before ordering. For CITES-listed materials from China, confirm the species and applicable permits with your customs broker before ordering.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual shell construction, fibre composition and garment design. Ribbed cuffs alone do not establish that the shell is knitted. Treat the table as candidate lines for classification checks. See women's knitted anoraks for the wider heading and import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify the knitted shell, ribs and zip

Specify shell fibre composition, knit structure, fabric weight, surface finish and colour. Define the bomber's body length, chest width, shoulder shape, sleeve length and sleeve opening in a graded measurement chart with agreed tolerances. Specify collar, cuff and hem rib construction and recovery, plus lining material, pocket construction and any embroidery.

Approve the zip type, opening direction, puller, attachment seam and reinforcement. Check the zipped garment on a wearer as well as flat: a stretched front edge can make the zip ripple. Agree pilling, colour transfer and dimensional-change checks using the intended care method. Retain a washed approval sample.

For sale in Great Britain, the label must show fibre content, including fur and other animal parts. Put the approved composition wording into the order and agree care wording separately. UK sellers must not sell products they know, or should have known, are unsafe. Include checks for sharp zip edges, broken needles and insecure trims in the purchasing specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 women's cotton knitted bomber jackets; FOB value and freight are illustrative, not a quotation. under 6102 20 90 00, invoiced at £7,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,700. Duty at 12% is £924. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,624, so it is £1,724.80. Import taxes total £2,648.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £924 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Shell and ribs: compare the knit, handle and shade with the retained sample; inspect dropped stitches, snagging, pilling and cuff, collar and hem recovery.

Fit and front opening: measure against the size chart; close and operate the zip, checking rippling, catching, uneven front lengths and lining trapped in the teeth.

Washing and assembly: repeat the agreed wash check; inspect shrinkage, twisting, shell-to-lining distortion, pocket attachment and seam opening when stretched.

Arrival and labels: check for damp cartons and musty garments; compare shades across cartons and verify size, fibre and care wording against the order. Record findings using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

The shell and rib can shrink differently, leaving a tight hem or flared cuffs. A zip sewn into a stretched knitted edge can ripple after washing. A lining that is too short can pull the sleeves or body upwards, while poorly reinforced pockets can distort the front.

A replacement yarn can match the colour yet change pilling, handle and recovery. Keep sealed shell, rib and garment samples, require approval for substitutions and compare production garments after washing. Check pocket reinforcement and zip attachment before shipment, then repeat the agreed checks on arrival.
