UK duty on women's knitted anoraks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 13 October 2026, heading 6102 covers women's or girls' knitted or crocheted outerwear, including anoraks and ski jackets, other than articles of heading 6104. This guide covers women's knitted anoraks. See the wider knitted outerwear guide for the broader heading. All selected anorak lines carry 12% duty on goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. For bomber styles, see our women's knitted bomber jacket sourcing guide.

The tariff attaches cat and dog fur and seal-product import controls to these lines, and CITES controls to the wool or fine animal hair and other-material lines. Imports containing cat or dog fur are banned. Seal products for sale in Great Britain must qualify under the Inuit and other indigenous communities' exemption and have a seal catch certificate. CITES-listed species in Annex A, B or C require a permit; confirm eligibility and shipment paperwork with your customs broker before ordering animal-derived materials.

Confirm the commodity code from the finished garment's construction and fibre composition, rather than its catalogue name. Give your broker the outer fabric, lining and trim details, photographs and an approved sample.

Specify the knit, hood and weather protection

Specify outer fabric fibre composition, knit structure, fabric weight, stretch and recovery, lining and any coating or membrane. Set a graded women's size chart with tolerances for chest, hip, sleeve and body length. Agree hood depth, collar height, cuff adjustment, hem shape, pocket construction and zip type against an approved sample.

Separate water resistance from waterproof performance in the brief. For any weatherproof claim, agree the test method and acceptance criteria for the finished garment, including seams and zip openings. For sale in Great Britain, the textile label must show fibre content, including fur and other animal parts. Approve fibre wording, size markings and care instructions before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 women's knitted anoraks, illustrative order under 6102 30 90 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £19,500. Duty at 12% is £2,340. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,840, so it is £4,368. Import taxes total £6,708; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,340 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fabric and fit: compare bulk fabric with the approved sample, measure garments across sizes and colours, and check stretch recovery at cuffs and elbows.

Hood and closures: check hood coverage with the collar fastened, operate zips repeatedly, and inspect pocket corners, drawcord attachments and lining clearance.

Wash and weather: wash samples using the agreed care instructions and check shrinkage, twisting, colour transfer and lining movement; verify agreed weatherproof tests on the finished construction.

Labels and packing: match fibre labels to the material records, check animal-derived trims against the approved specification, and compare size assortments with carton markings. Use the quality inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong

A knit can feel similar to the sample but stretch out at the hem, pill under bag straps or twist after washing. A lining with less stretch than the outer fabric can restrict movement. Zips can catch loose lining, while shallow hoods pull the collar upwards when fastened.

Water-repellent fabric alone does not demonstrate that a finished anorak keeps rain out through seams and closures. Keep the approved garment and material records together, compare each colour's production sample, and investigate substitutions before accepting the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on women's knitted anoraks from China?

The selected wool or fine animal hair, cotton, man-made fibre and other-material anorak lines all carry 12% duty. The tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

What label does a women's knitted anorak need?

Check the wording against the actual materials, rather than copying a factory's generic label.

Can I import anoraks with real fur trims?

Cat and dog fur imports are banned. Seal products need an applicable exemption and certificate. For other animal trims, confirm species, origin and any CITES requirements with your customs broker before ordering.

How do I check a knitted anorak is waterproof?

Agree tests and acceptance criteria for the finished garment, including seams, pockets and zip openings. A fabric report alone does not demonstrate the performance of the assembled anorak.
