UK duty on wireless charging pads

Heading 8504 covers electrical transformers, static converters and inductors. For wireless charging pads, confirm whether the finished product belongs under accumulator chargers or another static converter line. The table also includes separately imported adapters, inductors and converter parts; these are not interchangeable classifications for a finished pad.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, every supplied line carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT at 20% still applies; see import duty and VAT.

Give your broker the pad's operating description, input specification and details of any bundled adapter to confirm the commodity code. For the wider power-adapter family, see GaN chargers.

Specify the pad, adapter and supported devices

Specify supported phone models, charging modes, input requirements, cable, coil position, usable charging area and case compatibility. State whether the mains adapter is included. Agree how charging performance will be measured with the intended phone, adapter and case, rather than accepting the output printed on the carton.

For Great Britain, request the exact model's electromagnetic compatibility reports, technical documentation, declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking evidence. Confirm the electrical safety requirements applicable to a bundled mains adapter with the relevant authority. Compare model names, ratings and circuit boards with the approved sample. Arrange testing and certification where evidence is incomplete.

Request hazardous-substance compliance evidence for the pad, cable and adapter. Reports should be current and demonstrate compliance with permitted substance limits. As the UK business importing electrical equipment commercially for sale, arrange annual producer registration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: 3,000 wireless charging pads, subject to classification confirmation under 8504 40 60 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,800, so it is £2,560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Charging: test bulk samples with the agreed phones, cases, cable and adapter; check alignment, charging interruptions and simultaneous use where advertised.

Heat and protection: monitor pad and phone temperatures during sustained charging; have a competent laboratory assess foreign-object detection and protective shutdown.

Construction: compare coil placement, internal insulation, connector fit, non-slip feet and enclosure joints with the approved sample.

Documents and labels: match the supplied model and ratings to its reports and declaration; check conformity marks and importer details against the reference guidance. Relevant instructions must accompany the apparatus in English. Use quality inspection to organise these checks.

What goes wrong

A pad may indicate charging while delivering inconsistent performance with the buyer's actual phone or case. Adapter and cable changes can also alter the result. Retain the tested combination as the approved sample and record the conditions used for acceptance.

Reports may describe an earlier circuit board or a different adapter. A matching enclosure does not establish that the supplied electronics match the tested design. Compare the bulk goods with the approved sample before shipment and repeat functional checks on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on wireless charging pads from China?

The supplied heading 8504 lines carry 0% duty from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the finished pad's commodity code. Import VAT is 20%.

Which commodity code should I use for a wireless charging pad?

Ask your broker to distinguish accumulator chargers under 8504 40 60 90 from other static converters under 8504 40 95 90 using the actual design. Separate parts need their own classification.

Do wireless charging pads need CE or UKCA marking?

For Great Britain, check the applicable conformity marking, declaration and electromagnetic compatibility evidence for the exact model. Assess a bundled mains adapter separately against the electrical safety rules.

How do I check a wireless charging pad before shipment?

Test the approved phone, case, cable and adapter combination. Check charging continuity, alignment, temperature, connector fit and whether the bulk electronics match the model covered by the reports.
