Sourcing isolation transformers from China
Electrical isolation transformers from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected capacity bands. Mains-voltage units within scope must meet the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, with conformity documents and CE or UKCA marking. Specify separate windings and verify insulation under test. Cambridge China Bridge sources electrical isolation transformers.

UK duty on electrical isolation transformers
Heading 8504 covers electrical transformers, static converters and inductors. Electrical isolation transformers belong within its transformer branches. The selected rows cover other transformers by power-handling capacity; liquid dielectric designs have separate branches. The description “isolation transformer” alone does not determine the commodity code.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. Import VAT at 20% still applies.
Confirm the commodity code using the rated capacity, dielectric construction and intended function. For converters, chargers and other transformer families, see the wider heading guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other dry isolation transformers, not exceeding 1 kVA | 8504 31 80 90 | 0% | None |
| Other dry isolation transformers, over 1 kVA but not exceeding 16 kVA | 8504 32 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Other dry isolation transformers, over 16 kVA but not exceeding 500 kVA | 8504 33 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Other dry isolation transformers, over 500 kVA | 8504 34 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify winding separation and the connected load
Specify separate primary and secondary windings, input and output voltage, frequency, continuous capacity and the connected load. State whether the load includes motors or electronic equipment, and agree how starting current will be tested. An autotransformer shares a winding and does not provide the winding separation sought here.
Agree the insulation system, thermal protection, mounting dimensions, terminal layout, enclosure ventilation and screen connection where fitted. Provide a connection drawing showing the intended earthing arrangement. Ask for declared load and no-load losses, and test the agreed enclosure under the intended load.
For equipment within the mains-voltage scope, confirm with the relevant authority the technical documentation, declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking requirements under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Instructions must be in easily understandable English. Assess electromagnetic compatibility applicability for the actual assembly, including any electronic controls. Check hazardous-substance regulation scope and arrange annual producer registration where waste-electrical-equipment producer rules apply.
Match the safety report to the exact winding construction, insulation materials, protection devices and enclosure ordered. Ask the factory to identify the product standard used rather than accepting an unrelated transformer report. Our testing and certification service can arrange independent checks.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 enclosed electrical isolation transformers under 8504 31 80 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,800, so it is £2,560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and documents: check the model, rated capacity, voltage, terminal diagram, conformity documents, importer identification and English instructions against the approved specification.
Isolation and connections: have a competent test laboratory check winding separation, insulation resistance and dielectric withstand against the agreed test procedure; verify screen and enclosure connections.
Load performance: measure output voltage, winding resistance, losses and temperature rise under the agreed load; check starting behaviour and thermal protection.
Arrival condition: inspect mounting feet, terminal blocks, enclosure damage, loose laminations and moisture. Compare construction with the approved sample and retain the unit test records. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A supplier can offer a voltage-changing autotransformer when the buyer needs electrical separation. Other failure modes include substituted insulation, a smaller winding than the approved sample, loose core laminations and a protection device that operates too late. Confirm construction before bulk production and verify the finished units under load.
A report for an open transformer may not describe the enclosed version you receive. Restricted ventilation can raise temperature, while altered terminal links or screen wiring can defeat the agreed connection scheme. Require approval before construction changes and repeat the affected tests.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on isolation transformers from China?
The selected transformer lines carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty in the supplied tariff facts. Import VAT at 20% still applies.
Which commodity code covers a small isolation transformer?
8504 31 80 90 is the other-transformer line not exceeding 1 kVA. Confirm dielectric construction and function before using it; measuring transformers and specified designs have different lines.
Can I buy an autotransformer instead?
An autotransformer shares a winding. If your application needs separate primary and secondary windings, specify that construction explicitly and check the drawing and insulation test results.
What documents should I request from the factory?
Request the exact model’s safety report, connection drawing and routine test records. For equipment within scope, obtain technical documentation and a declaration of conformity, and check CE or UKCA marking.
