Sourcing wheel loaders from China

Wheel loaders from China carry 0% UK customs duty across the relevant loader lines, with no trade remedy recorded in the supplied tariff data. Before sale in Great Britain, check machinery conformity, engine emission approval and outdoor noise documents for the actual configuration. Cambridge China Bridge sources wheel loaders.

Wheel loader codes and UK duty

Heading 8429 covers self-propelled earthmoving machinery. Ordinary wheeled front-end shovel loaders fall within 8429 51 99 00; loaders specially designed for underground use have 8429 51 10 00. The table shows buying configurations sharing the ordinary loader code, alongside the underground line. These are not separate tariff subdivisions. For skid steer loaders, see our guide to sourcing skid steer loaders from China. For backhoe loaders, see our backhoe loader sourcing guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, both selected commodity lines carry 0% customs duty for goods from China. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code against the machine's construction and intended use before shipment. Keep crawler loaders and excavators separate from wheeled loaders when checking the declaration. For the wider heading and excavator trade remedies, see the excavators guide. For another earthmoving machine, see our self-propelled earthmoving scraper sourcing guide. For landfill equipment, see our self-propelled landfill compactor sourcing guide. For compaction equipment sourcing, see our vibratory road roller sourcing guide.

Specify the bucket, steering and working load

Describe the material to be handled, its bulk density, the bucket capacity and the required working load. Agree how the supplier measures load capacity and whether the quoted configuration includes the bucket, counterweight and tyres. Specify articulated or rigid-frame steering, discharge height, reach and the clearance needed at your site.

Name the engine, transmission, axles and hydraulic components in the purchase specification. Match the quick coupler and hydraulic connections to the attachments you plan to use. Request the machinery conformity assessment, technical file and declaration for the exact configuration, together with engine emission approval, noise documentation and English instructions. The responsible person must affix the relevant conformity marking.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: One wheel loader for a contractor, illustrative order under 8429 51 99 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £65,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £65,000, so it is £13,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and documents: match machine and engine plates to the order and supporting documents. Engine type approval demonstrates compliance with emission standards; check the approval evidence alongside the fitted engine.

Load handling: test lifting, lowering, bucket rollback and discharge using an agreed safe test load. Check coupler locking and attachment fit, and inspect hoses and cylinders for leaks after operation.

Travel and steering: check forward and reverse engagement, service and parking brakes, steering response, articulation-joint play and tyre condition. Repeat the checks after the machine has warmed up.

Cab and delivery: check visibility, controls, safety decals, English instructions and the parts book. Match the guaranteed sound-power label to the noise report. Photograph shipping damage and repeat the agreed checks on arrival; plan the quality inspection before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A bucket-volume claim can disguise unsuitable load capacity for dense material. Discharge reach may be inadequate for the buyer's hopper, or the coupler may fit the supplier's bucket but not existing attachments. Agree the actual working configuration and acceptance test before paying the balance. For aggregate processing equipment, see our aggregate washing plant sourcing guide.

Documents can describe a different engine or cab from the delivered machine. Other failure points include articulation-joint looseness, delayed transmission engagement, brake faults and hydraulic leaks that appear after warming up. Record component identities and test results before shipment, then compare them with the machine received.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on wheel loaders from China?

The selected ordinary and underground loader lines carry 0% customs duty. The supplied tariff data records no trade remedy on these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Do wheel loaders have the same anti-dumping duty as excavators?

The supplied loader lines record no anti-dumping duty. Excavator measures concern a different commodity line; check the machine's classification rather than applying an excavator rate to a wheel loader.

What documents should I request for a diesel wheel loader?

Request the exact model's machinery conformity assessment, technical file and declaration, engine emission approval, noise report, English instructions and parts book. Match them to the delivered configuration.

What should I test before the loader leaves the factory?

Test bucket operation, coupler locking, steering, brakes and transmission engagement. Check leaks after warming up, attachment compatibility and component identities, then repeat the agreed checks on arrival.
