UK duty on welded stainless exhaust tube stock

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant stainless tube lines under heading 7306 show 50% third-country duty for goods from China. Circular welded tube is divided between cold-drawn or cold-rolled tube and other tube. The table also covers shaped tube stock for special exhaust outlets; select the line by the actual cross-section and manufacturing process.

The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on these selected lines. The published welded steel tube guide describes 0% within an available quarterly steel quota and 50% outside it. Ask your broker to confirm quota eligibility and availability rather than budgeting automatically at 0%. Ask HMRC or your customs broker to confirm whether these circular stainless tube lines fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any requirements apply.

Send your broker the material certificate, cross-section, production route and drawings to confirm the commodity code. Ask whether fabrication into a vehicle-specific exhaust assembly changes the classification. Oil and gas line pipe is a different description from exhaust tube stock. For wider stainless tube sourcing under this heading, see welded stainless sanitary tubes.

Specify the tube for bending and exhaust fabrication

Specify the stainless grade and chemical composition, outside diameter, wall thickness, cut length, dimensional tolerances and surface finish. State whether you want straight tube stock, oval tube or shaped outlet blanks. Ask for mill certificates linked to heat numbers and agree how those numbers will remain traceable through cutting and packing.

Agree the weld process, internal weld bead condition and seam position for bending. Give the factory your bend and joining drawings, including expansion or swaging details where relevant. Trial a sample through your actual cutting, bending and welding process before accepting bulk production. Define acceptable ovality, wrinkling, cracking and joint fit against the drawing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 300 lengths of welded stainless steel exhaust tube under 7306 40 80 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 50% is £18,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,000, so it is £10,800. Import taxes total £28,800; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £18,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match bundle identification and heat numbers to certificates, and verify composition against the ordered grade.

Dimensions: measure diameter, wall thickness, straightness and cut length; check shaped sections against the drawing.

Weld and forming: inspect the seam and internal bead, then bend sample pieces to look for splitting, wrinkles and excessive flattening.

Arrival condition: check dents, crushed ends, burrs and surface contamination; trial-fit samples into the intended joints before releasing stock.

What goes wrong

A polished surface can hide a poor weld or the wrong material. Seams split during bending, internal beads obstruct tooling, and thin or uneven walls flatten around bends. Tube ends that are oval or poorly cut make joints difficult to align. Agree measurable acceptance criteria and retain an approved sample rather than accepting appearance alone.

Tube inspection does not establish how the finished exhaust will perform on a vehicle. It is illegal to modify the exhaust of a type-approved vehicle to make it noisier. Ask the exhaust fabricator to assess the intended installation and retain the vehicle application details; do not treat a supplier's general claim of road suitability as that assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stainless exhaust tubes from China?

The supplied snapshot lists 50% on the selected stainless tube lines. The reference guide describes 0% within an available steel quota. Confirm eligibility and availability with your broker.

Is there anti-dumping duty on welded stainless exhaust tubes?

The supplied facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on the selected stainless tube codes. Keep stainless tube separate from the iron or non-alloy steel products discussed in the wider guide.

What should I ask the Chinese tube factory for?

Ask for traceable material certificates, dimensional tolerances, weld and internal bead details, and samples for your actual bending and joining process.

Can these tubes be used to make a louder road exhaust?

It is illegal to modify the exhaust system of a type-approved vehicle to make it noisier. Assess the finished installation rather than relying on the tube supplier's description.
