Sourcing stainless capillary tubes from China

Welded stainless steel capillary tubes from China have a stated UK duty of 50%; the reference guide describes 0% where an eligible steel quota is allocated. Confirm the manufacturing route and cross-section before choosing the code, and specify bore cleanliness and weld testing. Cambridge China Bridge sources welded stainless steel capillary tubes.

UK duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7306 covers other iron or steel tubes, pipes and hollow profiles, including welded products. Circular welded stainless capillaries fall within the cold-drawn or cold-rolled line, or the other circular line, according to their manufacturing route. The non-circular rows are relevant only to shaped capillary profiles.

The supplied tariff snapshot records 50% for each selected line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control recorded. The published reference guide describes a conditional 0% steel quota for Chinese welded tubes. Ask your customs broker to confirm eligibility and allocation before budgeting for that rate; use the stated 50% if relief is not confirmed.

Give your broker the material specification, drawing and manufacturing process to confirm the commodity code. The word capillary does not describe whether the tube is welded or seamless. Read the wider welded precision tube guide. For imports from 1 January 2027, check the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and request mill emissions data.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify the bore, weld and delivery condition

Specify stainless grade, outside and inside dimensions, wall thickness, tolerances, ovality, straightness and cut length. State whether the tube is supplied as welded, cold-drawn or cold-rolled, and specify heat treatment, internal weld-bead condition and end deburring. Agree internal cleanliness, surface finish, end protection and packaging. Where flow matters, agree a sample flow test using your intended fluid and operating conditions.

For pressure-system applications, ask your equipment designer to confirm the applicable requirements before ordering. HSE identifies pressure equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar within the scope of the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations. Agree leak-test and weld-test methods, acceptance criteria and batch records with the supplier.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 300 cut lengths of cold-drawn welded stainless capillary tube, illustrative order under 7306 40 20 00, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,300. Duty at 50% is £2,150. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,450, so it is £1,290. Import taxes total £3,440; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,150 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material and traceability: match the mill certificate, heat number and package identification to the ordered stainless grade and batch.

Bore and dimensions: measure sampled cut lengths against the drawing, including internal diameter, wall thickness, ovality and end condition.

Weld and function: review weld-test records and run the agreed leak or flow checks on samples; inspect for seam cracking after any agreed bend test.

Cleanliness and packing: check for drawing lubricant, loose particles, burrs, blocked ends and handling damage. Compare arrival findings with the inspection record.

What goes wrong

An acceptable outside diameter can hide an uneven or restricted bore. Internal weld bead, lubricant and cutting debris can change flow or contaminate the buyer's process. A polished exterior does not establish internal cleanliness. Approve samples after cutting and cleaning, using the same inspection method planned for production.

Weld defects can appear during bending, and thin tube can kink during packing or installation. Agree bend trials, protective packing and batch identification before production. Keep the manufacturing-route evidence with the customs paperwork and confirm quota treatment before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on welded stainless capillary tubes from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot states 50% for the selected stainless welded-tube lines. The reference guide describes conditional 0% steel quota treatment; confirm eligibility and allocation with your customs broker.

Which commodity code covers welded stainless capillary tubes?

For circular tube, check 7306 40 20 00 if cold-drawn or cold-rolled, or 7306 40 80 00 otherwise. Provide the drawing and manufacturing route to your broker rather than relying on the supplier's product name.

How do I check the bore is clean?

Agree a cleanliness test before production. Inspect cut ends and sample interiors for lubricant, particles and burrs, then run the agreed flush or flow check. External polishing alone does not prove a clean bore.

What should I ask the factory for before ordering?

Ask for the manufacturing route, material certificate, dimensional results, weld-test records and samples in the final cleaned condition. Agree leak or flow acceptance criteria and check that batch records identify the supplied tube.
