Sourcing welded precision steel tubes from China

Chinese welded precision steel tubes carry 50% listed duty, with 0% available within applicable steel quotas. Genuine precision tubes are excluded from the small circular non-alloy tube anti-dumping measure. Confirm the material and manufacturing route before declaring the code. UK duty on welded precision steel tubes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected precision-tube lines under heading 7306 each show 50% third-country duty for goods from China. They distinguish circular non-alloy steel from other alloy steel, and cold-drawn or cold-rolled tubes from other precision tubes. For the broader product family, see welded steel tubes.

The site's wider welded-tube guide records 0% within applicable quarterly steel quotas and 50% outside quota. Confirm quota availability before shipment. The selected lines record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Genuine precision tubes are excluded from the small circular non-alloy welded-tube anti-dumping measure; the supplier's product name alone is insufficient classification evidence.

Give your customs broker the steel composition, cross-section, manufacturing route and product specification. Check any supplier code against UK treatment using finding your commodity code. Agree the intended application before ordering. Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether these tubes fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations apply, and request supplier emissions information alongside material records.

Specify dimensions, weld condition and delivery condition

Define the steel grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, inside diameter where functionally important, and cut length. Put tolerances for ovality, straightness and surface finish on the drawing. State whether the tube must be cold-drawn or cold-rolled, and specify its delivery condition rather than accepting an unspecified heat treatment.

State whether internal weld flash must be removed and whether the tube will be bent, expanded, machined or fitted over another component. Agree sample tests that reflect that operation. Ask for material certificates linked to heat numbers and bundle labels, and record the agreed rust protection and end protection.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 tonnes of cold-drawn welded precision steel tubes under 7306 30 12 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 50% is £18,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,000, so it is £10,800. Import taxes total £28,800; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £18,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match bundle labels and heat numbers to the order and material certificates; check that the recorded grade and manufacturing route match the specification.

Dimensions: measure diameter, wall thickness, ovality, straightness and cut length against the drawing, including the bore where it controls fit.

Seam and forming: inspect internal flash and seam condition; check agreed bend or flattening samples for splitting and confirm fit with the mating component.

Arrival condition: check for rust, dents, crushed ends and mixed bundles; photograph defects and retain the affected bundle identification.

What goes wrong

A tube can match the nominal outside diameter yet fail because its bore, ovality or internal weld flash prevents assembly. An unsuitable delivery condition can cause splitting during bending or expansion. Agree acceptance criteria on a sample that undergoes the buyer's actual process.

Ordinary welded tube supplied as precision tube creates both fit problems and classification risk. Retain drawings, manufacturing records and inspection results supporting the description. Keep affected bundles separate when certificates or heat numbers do not match, and resolve the discrepancy before use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on welded precision steel tubes from China?

The selected precision-tube codes show 50% duty. The wider welded-tube guide records 0% within applicable steel quotas. Confirm the exact code and quota availability before shipment.

Do Chinese welded precision tubes attract anti-dumping duty?

Genuine precision tubes are excluded from the small circular non-alloy welded-tube anti-dumping measure. The selected precision-tube lines record no trade remedy. Keep evidence supporting the classification.

What should I put on a precision-tube drawing?

Specify steel grade, diameter, wall thickness, cut length, ovality, straightness, delivery condition and weld-flash treatment. Include bore tolerances when they affect assembly.

How do I check whether the tubes will bend without splitting?

Agree a sample bend test using your intended tooling and process. Check the seam and delivery condition, and link the tested samples to the supplied material batch.
