UK duty on welded stainless sanitary tubes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 October 2026, heading 7306 covers other tubes, pipes and hollow profiles of iron or steel. Circular welded stainless sanitary tubes fall within the cold-drawn or cold-rolled description at 7306 40 20 00, or the other welded stainless circular tube description at 7306 40 80 00. The table separates purchasing variants within these commodity lines; polishing alone does not describe the cold-reduction process.

Both relevant lines show 50% third-country duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control listed in the supplied reading. Our wider welded steel tube guide describes 0% within an available steel quota. Ask your customs broker to confirm eligibility and availability before budgeting on that rate.

Give the broker the material, circular cross-section, welding method and any cold-drawing or cold-rolling records. Confirm the commodity code against the actual manufacturing route. Do not use the duty-free stainless oil or gas line-pipe description simply because the product is a stainless tube.

Specify the bore, weld and cleaning conditions

State the stainless grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, cut length, dimensional tolerances and end preparation. Specify internal and external finishes separately, including the internal weld profile, acceptable surface roughness and how it will be measured. Agree whether weld discolouration is removed, how the tube is cleaned and how capped ends are protected during transport.

For food-contact applications, the material must be safe and suitable for its intended use. Give the supplier the food or beverage, contact temperature, cleaning chemicals and cleaning regime. Ask for supporting suitability evidence that matches those conditions and the finished tube. A description such as sanitary or food grade is not a purchasing specification. Arrange testing and certification support where needed.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of welded sanitary tube lengths for a food-processing installation under 7306 40 80 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 50% is £18,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,000, so it is £10,800. Import taxes total £28,800; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £18,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match heat and batch identification to the mill documents, ordered grade and agreed material verification.

Bore and seam: inspect sampled tube interiors for weld protrusion, pits, scratches, discolouration and polishing residue; compare roughness measurements with the agreed acceptance criteria.

Dimensions and ends: measure diameter, wall thickness, ovality and straightness; check cut ends, burrs and fit with the intended fittings.

Cleanliness and packing: check dry, clean interiors, secure end caps and separation from contaminating materials. Compare findings with the approved sample and inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A bright external finish can hide an uneven internal weld or an incompletely polished bore. Different diameter conventions can leave tubes incompatible with the buyer's fittings. Residue, uncapped ends and handling scratches can undermine the finish agreed for cleaning. Inspect the inside as well as the outside before dispatch.

Another failure is treating all stainless tubes as interchangeable for customs purposes. Cold reduction and intended product description matter. Keep manufacturing records with the order, and confirm the duty position before shipment rather than relying on the supplier's general tube code.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on welded stainless sanitary tubes from China?

The supplied reading shows 50% on 7306 40 20 00 and 7306 40 80 00. The wider guide describes 0% within an available steel quota; confirm that route with your broker.

Is polished stainless tube enough for food-contact use?

No. Food-contact material must be safe and suitable for its intended use. Ask for evidence covering the finished tube and your food, temperature and cleaning conditions.

What should I specify for the internal weld?

Agree the weld profile, treatment of discolouration, bore finish, roughness acceptance criteria and inspection method. Keep an approved sample for comparison.

How do I check sanitary tubes on arrival?

Match batch documents, measure dimensions and fitting compatibility, inspect the bore and seam, and check cleanliness, end caps and transport damage.
