Sourcing welded oxygen lance tubes from China

Welded steel oxygen lancing tubes from China have 50% duty on the relevant lines, or 0% where a qualifying steel quota is available. Ordinary small non-alloy circular tubes also attract 90.6% anti-dumping duty. Supply must include safe-use information and necessary testing or examination. UK duty on welded steel oxygen lancing tubes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7306 covers welded tubes and other iron or steel hollow profiles. This guide concerns consumable welded steel tubes for oxygen lancing. The table gives possible classifications according to manufacture and end preparation, rather than interchangeable codes. A supplier calling its tube a precision product does not establish its classification.

The selected lines show 50% third-country duty for China. The published steel measure provides 0% within qualifying quarterly quotas. Ordinary non-alloy circular tubes up to 168.3 mm under 7306 30 77 80 or 7306 30 49 20 also attract 90.6% anti-dumping duty, separately from quota duty. Precision tubes are excluded from that anti-dumping goods description. The supplied snapshot lists no suspensions or attached import controls for these selected lines.

Send the broker the steel composition, manufacturing route, dimensions, coating and end details before confirming the code. Use finding your commodity code and the wider welded steel tube guide. Confirm quota availability and evidence for any anti-dumping exclusion before shipment. Consult the wider guide and confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether and when the carbon border adjustment mechanism applies to your shipment.

Specify the lance tube and its oxygen-service condition

Specify steel grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, bore, length, straightness and weld-flash condition. State whether ends are plain or threaded and provide the holder or coupling drawing. For coated tubes, identify the coating material, coverage and adhesion acceptance criteria. Separate the tube specification from the oxygen supply equipment specification.

Agree the cleaning process, inspection method and protective packing. HSE warns that oil and grease can react explosively with pure oxygen at high pressure. Request batch-linked material records, weld examination results and safe-use information covering the intended holder and operating conditions. Workplace-product supply obligations include safe-use information and testing or examination necessary for compliance.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 6 tonnes of unthreaded welded non-alloy steel oxygen lancing tubes under 7306 30 77 80, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £22,000. Duty at 50% is £11,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,000, so it is £6,600. Import taxes total £17,600; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £11,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure outside diameter, wall thickness, bore and straightness against the approved drawing; check end preparation and trial-fit samples in the intended holder.

Weld: inspect the seam and internal flash; review batch test records and carry out the agreed flattening or bend checks on samples.

Cleanliness and coating: inspect bores and ends for oil, grease, loose scale and debris; check coating coverage and adhesion where specified. Keep suspect batches separate.

Arrival records: match bundle labels, material records and inspection results to the purchase order; check for crushed ends, bent tubes and damaged protective packing. See quality inspection explained.

What goes wrong

A nominal diameter can match while the tube fails to seat or seal in the holder. Internal weld flash or loose coating can obstruct the bore, and weak seams can split during agreed sample tests. Specify acceptance criteria before production and retain an approved sample for comparison.

General-purpose oiled tube can arrive despite an oxygen-service cleaning request. Do not accept a visual surface check as proof of bore cleanliness. Another failure is budgeting only for quota duty and overlooking anti-dumping duty, or accepting a precision classification without supporting manufacturing evidence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on oxygen lancing tubes from China?

The relevant lines show 50%, with 0% available within qualifying steel quotas. Ordinary small non-alloy circular tubes also attract 90.6% anti-dumping duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Does calling the tube an oxygen lance remove anti-dumping duty?

The product name does not establish an exclusion. Check the actual goods description, steel composition and manufacturing route with the broker; precision-tube exclusions need supporting evidence.

What should I specify for the lance holder?

Provide the holder drawing and agree outside diameter, end preparation, thread details where relevant and fit acceptance. Trial-fit approved samples before releasing the production batch.

Can oxygen lancing tubes arrive with protective oil?

Agree an oxygen-service cleaning and packing specification. Oil and grease can react explosively with pure oxygen at high pressure. Hold contaminated batches pending assessment and suitable cleaning.
