Sourcing UV-C germicidal lamps from China

UV-C germicidal lamps and the selected lamp parts from China carry 0% UK duty, so the duty range here is 0%. Importers must check applicable electrical safety and hazardous-substance rules; workplace users must control UV exposure risks. Cambridge China Bridge sources UV-C germicidal lamps.

UK duty on germicidal lamps

Heading 8539 covers electric lamps and light sources, including ultraviolet lamps and lamp parts. This guide concerns UV-C germicidal lamps supplied as lamps, with separately supplied parts shown for comparison. For the wider lighting family, see LED bulbs, battens and floodlights. For UK-to-China trade, see our guide to exporting LED lamps to China. For sodium lighting, see our low-pressure sodium lamp sourcing guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, the selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. The ultraviolet and arc-lamp lines have no attached controls in the supplied reading. Lamp bases have an import control of mercury: the importer should confirm the requirement with their customs broker. Mercury-product restrictions need checking against the particular product, rather than assuming every mercury-containing lamp is banned.

Confirm the lamp technology, construction and whether the shipment contains lamps, parts or complete equipment before choosing the commodity code. Do not assign the lamp code to a complete disinfection machine without checking its classification.

Specify radiation output and replacement compatibility

Specify the intended water, air or surface application; lamp technology; spectral output; measured germicidal output; test distance and conditions; warm-up behaviour; and output over the claimed service life. Record tube material, dimensions, cap arrangement, ballast compatibility and whether ozone generation is intended. Ask for disinfection test results matching the proposed use, rather than accepting a visible glow as proof. For excimer models, see our excimer UV lamp sourcing guide.

For electrical equipment within the electrical safety regulations’ scope, check electrical safety compliance. For products within the hazardous-substance rules, obtain the technical documentation and declaration of conformity. For a mercury-containing design, ask the supplier to identify the applicable exemption and document mercury content before ordering. Arrange testing and certification around the actual model and application.

Employers must identify workplace radiation sources and control significant risks. Plan a shielded test arrangement for arrival testing, with suitable protection against accidental exposure. Lamps and luminaires also have waste electrical equipment producer registration responsibilities, as explained in WEEE for importers.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 5,000 replacement germicidal lamps for a trade distributor, illustrative only under 8539 49 00 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £63,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £63,000, so it is £12,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare lamp markings, cap geometry, pin alignment and dimensions with the approved drawing and sample; check fit with the specified ballast and holder.

Output: have a competent test facility check spectral output and germicidal output under the agreed conditions; compare results with the approved sample and batch report.

Protection: inspect shielding and test any enclosure interlocks supplied with the equipment; check instructions and warning labels against the intended installation.

Condition and records: inspect tubes for cracks, loose caps and transit damage; match batch identification to test reports, mercury-content records and the declaration of conformity.

What goes wrong

Watch for substituted tube material, altered lamp chemistry, mismatched ballasts and loose lamp caps. A lamp may fit its holder and illuminate while failing the agreed germicidal-output test. Freeze the approved construction and require written approval for changes. Treat an unsupported disinfection claim as a reason to obtain application-specific testing.

HSE warns against using potentially harmful germicidal lamps as replacements in otherwise safe insect-killing devices or fluorescent fittings. Check replacement listings carefully. Separate damaged mercury-containing lamps from saleable stock; mercury-added products must be disposed of as hazardous waste. For fluorescent replacements, see our fluorescent lamp sourcing guide.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on UV-C lamps from China?

The supplied tariff reading shows 0% duty for ultraviolet lamps under 8539 49 00 00 and the selected arc-lamp and parts lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can I use a germicidal lamp in an insect killer?

HSE warns against replacing lamps in otherwise safe insect-killing devices or fluorescent fittings with potentially harmful germicidal lamps. Use the type specified by the equipment manufacturer.

What should I request for a mercury-containing lamp?

Request mercury-content records, the applicable hazardous-substance exemption, technical documentation and a declaration of conformity. Check mercury-product import restrictions for the exact design.

How do I check that a UV-C lamp works?

Specify measured spectral and germicidal output under agreed test conditions. Commission application-specific disinfection testing; a visible glow does not establish the agreed performance.
