Sourcing uncoated IF steel coils from China
Uncoated cold-rolled interstitial-free steel coils from China have recorded UK duty rates of 0% to 50%. Heading 7209 requires non-alloy steel at least 600 mm wide; check mill chemistry and thickness before choosing the code. Cambridge China Bridge sources uncoated cold-rolled interstitial-free steel coils.

Coil classification and recorded UK duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 7209 covers cold-rolled iron or non-alloy steel at least 600 mm wide, not clad, plated or coated. This guide concerns uncoated interstitial-free coils within that scope. Check the mill chemistry against the tariff's alloy definitions rather than relying on the interstitial-free description. See deep-drawing steel sheets for the wider heading.
The supplied snapshot records 0% duty for the relevant non-electrical coil lines, except the lines below 0,35 mm, which show 50% and a steel measure. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. These are recorded rates, so ask your broker to check the entry-date tariff and any quota treatment before shipment.
Confirm the commodity code using chemistry, width, thickness, processing condition and coil form. Annealed black plates have a separate thin-coil line. Officials may request supply-chain evidence at the border for third-country-processed steel; ask your broker to review Russian-input sanctions and retain material-origin records.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-alloy IF coils, thickness exceeding 1 mm but less than 3 mm | 7209 16 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Non-alloy IF coils, thickness 0,5 mm or more but not exceeding 1 mm | 7209 17 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Non-alloy IF coils, thickness 0,35 mm or more but less than 0,5 mm | 7209 18 91 00 | 0% | None |
| Non-alloy IF coils, thickness below 0,35 mm, other than annealed black plates | 7209 18 99 90 | 50% outside quota | None |
Specify chemistry and drawing performance
Specify the exact grade and agreed product standard, annealing and skin-pass condition, and the intended pressing operation. Ask for heat-specific carbon, nitrogen, titanium and niobium results, alongside yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and agreed drawing-property tests. Approve a pressing trial using material representative of the production coils.
Agree thickness and width tolerances, surface roughness, exposed or concealed surface quality, edge condition, oil type and oiling level. Specify coil inner diameter, maximum coil weight and winding direction to suit your decoiler. Ask how the mill prevents moisture reaching the wraps during storage and shipping.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 tonnes of uncoated cold-rolled interstitial-free steel coils; illustrative order under 7209 17 90 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match coil labels, heat numbers and mill certificates; check that chemistry and mechanical results match the ordered grade.
Dimensions: measure thickness and width across accessible samples; check edge wave, centre buckle, camber and damaged edges against the agreed tolerances.
Surface: inspect for rust, scratches, roll marks and uneven oiling; compare roughness and pressing-trial results with the approved sample.
Packing and traceability: check wrapping, straps, coil-eye protection and moisture damage on arrival; retain the supply-chain records. Agree the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A supplier substitutes ordinary drawing steel, changes the annealing condition or sends certificates that cannot be matched to the coils. The material then splits, forms uneven ears or marks the pressed surface. Approve the grade and pressing trial before ordering, and agree how disputed coils will be identified and tested.
Outer wraps can look acceptable while moisture damages inner wraps; crushed edges and telescoped coils also disrupt feeding. Photograph packing and coil condition before unloading and keep affected coils identifiable. A thin-coil classification error can also change the duty materially.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on IF steel coils from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% for most relevant coil lines and 50% for the lines below 0,35 mm. The exact code and entry-date measures determine the duty.
Does interstitial-free steel always fall under heading 7209?
Check the actual chemistry against the tariff's alloy definitions. This guide covers non-alloy, uncoated cold-rolled coils at least 600 mm wide; the product name alone is insufficient.
What should I ask the mill to supply?
Ask for heat-linked chemistry and mechanical results, the annealing and skin-pass condition, surface and dimensional tolerances, coil dimensions and material for a representative pressing trial.
What should I check when the coils arrive?
Match labels to certificates, measure thickness and width, inspect rust and edge damage, and check winding and packing. Keep affected coils separate and retain photographs before processing.
