Sourcing enamelling steel sheets from China

Uncoated enamelling steel sheets from China carry 0% UK duty across the non-electrical sheet lines shown. Heading 7209 covers uncoated cold-rolled non-alloy steel at least 600 mm wide. Specify an enamelling grade and prove it with your firing process before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources uncoated enamelling steel sheets.

Duty on uncoated enamelling steel sheets

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 7209 covers cold-rolled flat products of iron or non-alloy steel, at least 600 mm wide, not clad, plated or coated. This guide concerns bare steel sheets bought for subsequent enamelling. The table selects non-electrical sheet lines, not finished enamelled products.

Goods from China on all the sheet lines shown carry 0% third-country duty. These lines have no steel measure, anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty, suspension or import control listed in the tariff snapshot. That tariff position does not replace the separate supply-chain sanctions checks described below.

Confirm the commodity code from composition, width, thickness, sheet or coil form and processing condition. Enamelling suitability alone does not determine classification. See the wider cold-rolled steel sheet guide. For future orders, check carbon border adjustment planning: the UK scheme comes into effect on 1 January 2027.

Specify steel for your enamel and firing process

Specify an enamelling grade, steel chemistry, annealing condition, thickness, dimensions, flatness, surface finish and protective oil. Tell the mill whether the sheet will be drawn, folded or welded before firing, and describe your enamel system, pretreatment and firing cycle. Agree acceptance criteria for enamel adhesion, pinholes, blistering, fishscaling and distortion.

Approve a trial using steel from the proposed production route and your actual forming and firing process. A drawing-quality sheet sample alone does not establish enamelling performance. Ask for batch-linked mill records and test results, and agree moisture protection, supported sheet packs and identification that remains readable after unpacking.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 tonnes of uncoated enamelling steel sheets (illustrative order) under 7209 27 90 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match pack labels and heat or batch references to the order, mill records, chemistry and agreed enamelling grade.

Dimensions: measure thickness, width and length, and check flatness, squareness, edge burrs and damage against the agreed tolerances.

Surface and packing: inspect for rust, scratches, dents, staining and uneven oil; check wrapping and supports for moisture or transport damage.

Firing trial: retain batch samples and check enamel adhesion, pinholes, blisters, fishscaling and distortion after the agreed firing process. Use the quality inspection guide to define the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

Ordinary cold-rolled drawing steel is substituted for the agreed enamelling grade, or a successful sample comes from a different production route. Problems can appear only after firing: poor adhesion, gas defects, fishscaling or warped panels. Damp packs cause rust before processing. Keep the approved sample, batch records and firing results together, and isolate suspect packs before production.

Ask your customs broker to screen the steel supply chain for Russian input. UK guidance prohibits covered Russian iron and steel processed into covered products in a third country. Traders should be prepared to provide supply-chain documentation. Obtain upstream origin and processing records before shipment; a Chinese dispatch address alone does not describe that history.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on enamelling steel sheets from China?

The non-electrical sheet lines shown carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff reading. No steel measure, anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed on these lines. Confirm the code and current measures before shipment.

Can I use ordinary cold-rolled steel for enamelling?

Do not assume it will work. Specify an enamelling grade and trial the proposed steel with your enamel, pretreatment, forming and firing process before accepting the production batch.

How do I check enamelling steel for fishscaling?

Agree a firing trial and observation period with your enameller. Keep batch-linked samples and examine the enamel after firing. A visual inspection of bare steel cannot establish resistance to fishscaling.

What origin evidence should I get from the Chinese mill?

Ask for upstream steel origin and processing records linked to your batch. UK guidance says traders should be prepared to provide supply-chain documentation for the third-country processed steel sanctions checks.
