Sourcing deep-drawing steel sheets from China
Deep-drawing steel sheets on the listed lines carry 0% UK duty from China. Heading 7209 ranges from 0% to 50%, with the higher rate on certain very thin coils. Classify by dimensions and supply form, and check for sanctioned Russian steel inputs. Cambridge China Bridge sources deep-drawing steel sheets.

Duty depends on thickness and supply form
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 7209 covers cold-rolled flat products of iron or non-alloy steel, at least 600 mm wide, without cladding, plating or coating. This guide focuses on uncoated deep-drawing material. The table shows dimensional lines that may cover suitable grades, rather than separate tariff categories for deep-drawing performance.
The selected sheet and coil lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff snapshot shows 50% and a steel measure on 7209 18 99 10 and 7209 18 99 90. It records no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls across this heading. These are the recorded rates, rather than a guarantee for a later declaration.
Confirm the commodity code from composition, width, thickness, surface treatment and whether delivery is in coils or sheets. For the wider product family, see cold-rolled steel sheet. Separately, UK sanctions prohibit certain Russian-origin iron and steel processed in third countries. Check the input supply chain before buying from a Chinese mill.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

Specify forming performance, not just sheet thickness
Specify the grade and agreed product standard, annealing condition, thickness tolerance, flatness, sheet dimensions and rolling direction. Agree tensile strength, yield strength and elongation requirements with your press operator. For demanding draws, request plastic strain ratio and strain-hardening data rather than accepting a description such as soft steel.
Approve material through a trial using your tooling, lubricant and blank shape. Agree surface roughness, permitted marks and protective oil with the mill, particularly where the drawn part will be painted. Ask for batch-linked test results and identify how long material can be stored before forming performance should be checked again.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 tonnes of deep-drawing steel sheets; illustrative order under 7209 27 90 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Traceability: match bundle or coil identifiers to mill certificates, chemistry and mechanical results. Request verifiable input-origin records; official guidance says supplier declarations may be acceptable, but further evidence may be requested retrospectively.
Dimensions: measure thickness across sampled sheets and check width, length, squareness and flatness against the purchase specification.
Surface and packing: check for rust, scratches, dents, edge burrs and uneven oiling. Inspect moisture barriers and photograph damaged bundles before unpacking.
Forming: trial representative material from the delivered batches and check splitting, wrinkles, earing and surface marks against the approved sample. Plan these checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A sheet can meet its thickness specification yet split during drawing because its mechanical properties or annealing condition differ from the approved material. Changes in rolling direction, lubrication or blank shape can also change the result. Keep trial records and agree how failed batches will be investigated before ordering.
Mixed batches, missing mill records and damp packing make failures harder to trace. Quarantine affected bundles and retain their labels and samples. For future steel imports, the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism starts on 1 January 2027; review registration exposure through the UK carbon border guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on deep-drawing steel sheets from China?
The selected sheet lines carry 0% in the supplied tariff snapshot. Heading 7209 ranges from 0% to 50%; the higher rate is recorded on 7209 18 99 10 and 7209 18 99 90.
Does a deep-drawing grade determine the commodity code?
Do not classify from the grade name alone. Match composition, dimensions, surface treatment and sheet or coil form to the tariff description.
What should I ask the Chinese steel mill for?
Ask for batch-linked chemistry and mechanical results, annealing details, surface and oil specifications, and material for a tooling trial. Request verifiable input-origin records.
How do I check deep-drawing sheets on arrival?
Match bundle labels to certificates, measure dimensions and flatness, inspect rust and surface damage, then trial representative material using the approved forming process.
