Sourcing UHMWPE braided ropes from China

UHMWPE braided ropes from China carry 8% UK duty across the relevant polyethylene lines, with no listed trade remedies. Linear density decides the subheading. For rope sold for lifting, confirm declaration and working load marking requirements with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources UHMWPE braided ropes.

Polyethylene rope: 8% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 5607 covers twine, cordage, ropes and cables, including braided and plastic-coated rope. UHMWPE is ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. Within the polyethylene branch, braided rope over 5 g/m falls under 5607 49 11 00; rope measuring 5 g/m or less falls under 5607 49 90 00.

Both relevant lines carry 8% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. The surgical-twine suspension elsewhere in the heading does not cover UHMWPE rope. The table distinguishes coated and uncoated versions of the same applicable codes.

Confirm the fibre composition, construction and measured linear density before choosing the commodity code. Finished articles with fittings need a separate classification check. See the wider rope and cordage guide for other materials and constructions.

Specify the fibre, braid and finished strength

Specify the UHMWPE fibre grade, whether the rope contains other fibres, braid construction, diameter under an agreed reference tension, linear density, coil length and coating. Agree minimum breaking force for the supplied rope, including any splice or termination. Ask whether reported strength refers to yarn, bare rope or the finished assembly.

Agree sample testing to ISO 2307 for linear density and breaking force. Include elongation under the intended load, abrasion at contact points and splice security in the acceptance brief. Request fibre purchase records and batch-linked test reports through factory verification.

For rope sold for lifting, confirm with the relevant authority which declaration and working load marking requirements apply under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008. The responsible person must compile the technical file and make it available on request. Consumer rope sold in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Agree the intended use before testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 12 coils of uncoated UHMWPE braided rope over 5 g/m under 5607 49 11 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £27,000. Duty at 8% is £2,160. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,160, so it is £5,832. Import taxes total £7,992; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,160 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match the fibre records and coating specification to the approved sample and delivered batch.

Dimensions: measure coil length, diameter under the agreed tension and mass per metre; check against the order.

Strength: take samples from the delivered lot, verify breaking force and elongation, and pull-test supplied splices or terminations.

Finish and identification: inspect braid consistency, damaged strands, coating transfer and coil labels; match batch references to test reports and check lifting declarations and working load markings where applicable.

What goes wrong

A supplier may quote yarn strength while delivering a rope whose braid or splice performs differently. Short coils, undeclared fibre blends, uneven coating and slipping splices can defeat an otherwise clear order. Retain the approved sample and require reports that identify the tested construction and production batch.

Do not treat breaking force as the working load limit or assume that a rope advertised for winching is suitable for lifting or climbing. Check the evidence for the intended application. Put sampling and acceptance checks in writing using the quality inspection guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on UHMWPE braided rope from China?

The relevant polyethylene rope lines carry 8% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot. Neither line lists trade remedies, suspensions or attached import controls.

Which commodity code covers UHMWPE braided rope?

For polyethylene braided rope, use 5607 49 11 00 above 5 g/m or 5607 49 90 00 at 5 g/m or less, subject to confirming the actual composition and construction.

Can I sell UHMWPE rope for lifting?

Confirm with the relevant authority which declaration and working load marking requirements apply to lifting rope under the machinery safety rules. Agree testing for the finished rope and any supplied termination.

What should I ask the Chinese factory to test?

Ask for batch-linked linear density and breaking-force tests to ISO 2307, plus agreed elongation and splice tests. Check that the report covers the delivered rope rather than its yarn alone.
