Sourcing surge protection devices from China
Surge protection devices from China under the circuit-protection lines of heading 8536 pay 0% UK duty; separately supplied backup fuses can attract 2%. For mains-voltage models, confirm electrical safety conformity documentation and marking requirements for sale in Great Britain with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources surge protection devices.

Duty on surge protection devices
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 8536 covers electrical circuit protection apparatus for voltages not exceeding 1,000 V. Its other circuit-protection lines cover surge protection devices in different current bands. The fuse row is an associated purchase, classified separately, rather than another surge protection device category.
The selected surge protection lines carry 0% duty for goods from China; the separately supplied fuse line carries 2%. None of these selected lines has an anti-dumping or countervailing measure or a tariff suspension. The tariff attaches an export control of mercury to these lines. Ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance to the shipment and any associated declaration requirement.
Confirm the commodity code using the device's function, circuit current and voltage rating. Ask the broker which current rating determines the tariff band rather than choosing from the advertised surge discharge current alone. For other products within the heading, see circuit breakers, switches and connectors. For UK-to-China sales, see our guide to exporting switchgear and control panels.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surge protection apparatus, current not exceeding 16 A | 8536 30 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Surge protection apparatus, current over 16 A but not exceeding 125 A | 8536 30 30 00 | 0% | None |
| Surge protection apparatus, current exceeding 125 A | 8536 30 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Separately supplied backup fuses, current over 10 A but not exceeding 63 A | 8536 10 50 90 | 2% | None |
Specify the surge protection assembly
State the intended supply system, alternating or direct current use, continuous operating voltage, protection modes and mounting arrangement. Agree the surge test waveform, discharge current, voltage protection level, thermal disconnection arrangement and backup protection. Specify whether the order includes the base, replaceable cartridge and remote status contact. Ask for drawings showing terminal capacity, wiring and replacement compatibility.
For mains-voltage models within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, obtain technical documentation, a declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification. Equipment supplied in Great Britain must have easily understandable English instructions. Check hazardous-substance compliance against the rules described in the wider heading guide, and match supporting reports to the exact model and materials. Arrange testing and certification before approving bulk production.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: 600 surge protection devices under 8536 30 30 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the base and cartridge model, ratings, batch identification and conformity documents to the approved sample and purchase specification.
Assembly: check terminal screws, conductor clamping, mounting clips, cartridge retention and dimensions against the approved drawings.
Status indication: check the condition indicator and any remote contact against the agreed operating states; inspect for cracked housings and loose parts on arrival.
Protection performance: have a competent laboratory compare sampled production units with the agreed surge and thermal disconnection tests. Record the sample identity and results; a working indicator alone does not demonstrate surge protection.

What goes wrong
A quotation can describe only the replaceable cartridge while the buyer expects a complete device with its base. Other rejection points include incompatible cartridges, unclear wiring instructions and surge ratings copied from a different model's report. Agree the complete assembly and document the approved model before ordering.
Treat changes to protective components, terminal materials or thermal disconnection parts as changes requiring review against the approved specification. Ask the factory to identify substitutions before shipment, and hold affected goods for assessment when the documents and delivered model disagree.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on surge protection devices from China?
The selected surge protection lines under 8536 30 carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. Separately supplied backup fuses in the selected fuse line carry 2%.
Do surge protection devices need CE or UKCA marking?
For mains-voltage models, confirm with the relevant authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations apply and what CE or UKCA marking, technical documentation and declaration of conformity are required for the Great Britain market.
Can I choose the commodity code from the surge current rating?
Ask your broker to confirm the relevant tariff current rating from the complete datasheet. Do not choose the current band solely from the advertised surge discharge current.
What should I ask a Chinese surge protection factory for?
Request the complete assembly drawing, wiring instructions, protection ratings and model-specific test reports. Confirm cartridge compatibility, thermal disconnection and backup protection before approving production.
