Sourcing fused connection units from China
Relevant heading 8536 lines carry 0% or 2% UK duty from China, depending on classification and whether fuses arrive separately. Mains-voltage fused connection units must meet electrical safety rules before sale in Great Britain. Check the exact model's documentation and terminal construction. Cambridge China Bridge sources fused connection units.

Classification before calculating duty
Heading 8536 covers electrical switching, protection and connection apparatus for voltages not exceeding 1,000 V. The tariff file does not name fused connection units separately. The table shows candidate complete-unit lines and separately imported replacement fuses; it does not assign every switched unit to the switches line.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected complete-unit candidate lines carry 0% duty from China and the separate fuse lines carry 2%. These lines have no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The switches line attaches mercury import control. Confirm that the product is mercury-free; covered mercury-added products are prohibited unless an exemption applies. The selected lines also flag mercury export control; confirm any applicable requirement with your customs broker.
Give your broker the circuit diagram, switched or unswitched design, ratings and details of the fuse supplied. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. Separately supplied fuse links have their own classification; see the cartridge fuses guide for the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other switches over 60 V, a candidate line for switched units | 8536 50 80 00 | 0% | None |
| Other electrical apparatus, a candidate line for complete connection units | 8536 90 95 00 | 0% | None |
| Separately imported replacement fuses, not exceeding 10 A | 8536 10 10 90 | 2% | None |
| Separately imported replacement fuses, over 10 A but not exceeding 63 A | 8536 10 50 90 | 2% | None |
Specify the fuse carrier and connection layout
Specify switched or unswitched construction, which conductors the switch disconnects, indicator requirements, fuse rating and carrier design. Define terminal positions, accepted conductor sizes, cable outlet and cord grip, mounting centres, back-box clearance, faceplate material and finish. Approve an assembled sample with the intended cable fitted.
For mains-voltage units within scope, the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 require conformity assessment and CE or UKCA marking for the Great Britain market. Confirm the applicable technical documentation requirements with the relevant authority. Check the declaration and test reports against the exact model, including its indicator and enclosure variants. Include hazardous-substance compliance evidence and importer identification in the purchasing file. Arrange testing and certification around the actual construction.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative only: 600 unswitched fused connection units, subject to code confirmation under 8536 90 95 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,100, so it is £420. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Terminals: check conductor entry, screw threads, clamping security and earth-terminal continuity against the approved sample and drawing.
Fuse carrier: check fuse fit, contact grip, carrier retention and access. Compare the supplied fuse markings with the order.
Assembly: check switch operation and disconnection against the circuit diagram, indicator operation, cord-grip security and back-box fit. Arrange insulation and temperature-rise testing against the agreed test plan.
Identification: match model and batch details to the documentation, check conformity marking and importer details, and confirm that instructions are in understandable English.

What goes wrong
Loose fuse contacts and terminals can cause local heating. A carrier that fits the sample may bind after moulding changes, while a shallow enclosure can leave inadequate cable space. Require approval before changes to contact material, mouldings, screws or fuse suppliers.
A report for a plain unit may not cover an illuminated or metal-faced version. Compare the report photographs and model list with bulk stock. Keep arrival batches identifiable and investigate cracked carriers, stripped terminal threads or inconsistent switching before releasing stock.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on fused connection units from China?
The selected complete-unit candidate lines carry 0%; separately imported fuses carry 2%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed for these lines. Confirm the complete unit's code from its construction.
Do fused connection units need CE or UKCA marking?
Mains-voltage units within the electrical safety regulations need the applicable conformity marking. Great Britain accepts CE or UKCA under the relevant route; a mark alone does not establish compliance.
Can I use the fuse code for a complete fused spur?
Do not assume so. A complete unit combines connection, protection and sometimes switching. Ask your broker to classify the assembly from its diagram and ratings; separately imported fuse links are listed separately.
What should I check on arrival?
Check terminal clamping, fuse-carrier fit, switch operation, earth continuity, cord grip and enclosure clearance. Match the actual model and supplied fuse to the approved sample and test documentation.
