Sourcing electrical junction boxes from China

Electrical junction boxes with connection apparatus generally use a 0% duty line; separately imported general plugs and sockets can carry 2%. Confirm the complete assembly's code and whether electrical safety rules apply to its rated voltage. Cambridge China Bridge sources electrical junction boxes.

Junction-box duty and component codes

Heading 8536 covers electrical connection apparatus, including junction boxes, for voltages not exceeding 1,000 V. This guide concerns boxes containing connection apparatus and associated connection components. An empty enclosure should not automatically receive the same code. The table includes components bought separately, rather than treating every line as a finished junction box.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected other-apparatus, wire-terminal and prefabricated-element lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. General plugs and sockets carried 2%, with a suspension restricted to specified manufacturing products. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty appears on these selected lines. They carry an export-control flag for mercury; the supplied data lists no import control on these lines.

Confirm the commodity code using the assembled product, terminal arrangement and ratings. Do not apply a component's duty to a complete box without checking classification. For the wider heading, see circuit breakers, switches and connectors.

Specify the box and its connections together

Specify enclosure material, usable internal space, mounting arrangement, cable-entry positions, gland threads, lid fastening and gasket material. For the terminals, agree conductor types and sizes, connection method, current and voltage ratings, tightening instructions and earth-terminal arrangement. State whether glands, blanking plugs and terminals are included.

For mains-voltage connection equipment, confirm with the relevant authority which requirements under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply, including technical documentation, a declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification. Where the equipment falls within these regulations, the importer must ensure that accompanying instructions are in easily understandable English. Match the documents to the complete model supplied, including its terminals and enclosure. Arrange testing and certification around the intended use.

For outdoor or damp locations, agree evidence for the claimed ingress protection with the actual glands, seals and blanking plugs fitted. Ask for material and hazardous-substance evidence for the terminals, plating and insulation, consistent with the substance rules described in the wider-heading guide.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 junction boxes with terminals; values are illustrative, not a quotation. under 8536 90 95 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Enclosure: compare material, wall condition, mounting points and cable entries with the approved drawing; check for cracks, sharp edges and distorted lids.

Connections: fit the specified conductors, check terminal retention and screw engagement, and compare contact material and earth-terminal arrangement with the approved sample.

Seals: check gasket seating, gland fit and unused-entry closures; assess the agreed ingress-protection evidence for the supplied configuration.

Documents: match model identifiers, ratings and markings to the declaration and test reports; check English instructions and importer identification where required.

What goes wrong

A box can look correct while its terminals accept the wrong conductor size or its screws strip during installation. Gaskets can pinch at corners, lids can bow, and supplied glands can leave gaps around the intended cable. Compare the assembled sample with the installation arrangement before approving bulk production.

Reports for a different enclosure or terminal set leave the supplied assembly unverified. Record approved materials and fittings, then check bulk goods against them. Use quality inspection to identify substitutions before shipment and repeat the assembly checks on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on electrical junction boxes from China?

The selected junction-box and terminal lines carry 0%. Separately imported general plugs and sockets carry 2%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty appears on these selected lines.

Can I use the same code for an empty box?

Do not assume so. Give your customs broker the enclosure material, drawings and details of any fitted connection apparatus so classification reflects the goods supplied.

What documents should I request for a mains junction box?

For equipment within the electrical safety Regulations, request technical documentation, the declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking, importer identification and understandable English instructions.

How do I check an outdoor junction box?

Check the complete configuration: lid seal, glands, cable fit and closures for unused entries. Match ingress-protection evidence to those fittings, rather than relying on the enclosure's appearance.
