Sourcing steel socket-weld fittings from China

Steel socket-weld pipe fittings from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected lines, with no trade remedies recorded. Pressure-equipment conformity assessment depends on classification, so confirm the intended application before ordering. Specify socket dimensions, material grade and batch traceability. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel socket-weld pipe fittings.

Zero duty on the selected socket-weld lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines under heading 7307 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or attached import control on these lines.

Heading 7307 covers iron or steel tube and pipe fittings. For this guide, the table selects other unthreaded fittings and flanges relevant to socket-weld products. These are classification candidates: confirm the material, connection design and full tariff description using finding your commodity code. For related products across the heading, see steel butt-weld pipe fittings.

Ask HMRC or your customs broker to confirm whether heading 7307 fittings fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any requirements apply. Ask the supplier for material and emissions traceability when planning later imports, and read the UK carbon border adjustment guide. Zero customs duty does not remove import VAT; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the socket and the pressure application

Specify the fitting shape, material grade, manufacturing method, mating pipe outside diameter and wall thickness, socket bore and depth, minimum fitting wall thickness, pressure class and operating temperature. Include a dimensioned drawing and the agreed manufacturing standard in the product specification. State whether the order includes socket-weld flanges or mixed socket and threaded connections.

Pressure-equipment rules regulate design, manufacture and conformity assessment of equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar. The applicable assessment depends on classification. Ask the piping designer to confirm how the rules apply to the supplied fittings and completed system before agreeing the factory's documentation.

Agree material certificates linked to heat numbers, the inspection method and acceptance criteria before production. For stainless fittings, specify surface condition and cleaning; for carbon steel, agree corrosion protection that keeps the socket surfaces suitable for welding.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative merchant stock order: 10 tonnes of steel socket-weld elbows, tees and couplings under 7307 99 80 98, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Sockets: measure bore diameter, depth, shoulder position and concentricity against the drawing. Trial-fit the specified pipe and check that burrs or coating do not obstruct insertion.

Material: match fitting markings and heat numbers to the material certificates. Agree any independent grade verification and check that mixed grades remain identifiable after unpacking.

Body and surfaces: inspect for cracks, laps, damaged edges, rust and contamination. Measure wall thickness and check flange dimensions where socket-weld flanges are included.

Tests and packing: review the agreed test records and acceptance results. Keep sizes and heats separated, protect socket openings and repeat sample checks on arrival. Arrange quality inspection against the purchase specification.

What goes wrong

A fitting sold only by nominal pipe size can have the wrong socket bore or depth for the actual pipe. Loose or obstructed fit, uneven wall thickness and off-centre sockets can disrupt welding and assembly. Approve measured samples against the mating pipe before releasing the batch.

Material certificates may describe a different heat from the delivered fittings, while mixed grades lose their identity in shared cartons. Catalogue pressure claims can also lack supporting evidence for the intended temperature and service. Keep drawing approval, certificate matching and test acceptance tied to the actual batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel socket-weld fittings from China?

The selected heading 7307 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff records. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded on those lines.

Which commodity code covers steel socket-weld fittings?

Check 7307 29 80 90 for other unthreaded stainless fittings and 7307 99 80 98 for other steel fittings within its diameter limit. Socket-weld flanges have separate lines. Confirm the full description.

Do socket-weld fittings need CE or UKCA marking?

Confirm the product's pressure-equipment classification and applicable conformity assessment before agreeing marking. Ask the piping designer to assess the supplied fittings and completed system.

What should I check when socket-weld fittings arrive?

Check socket bore and depth, trial-fit the mating pipe, measure wall thickness, inspect surfaces and match heat markings to certificates. Keep mixed sizes and grades separated.
